Furball solutions Top Regular combing (rather than brushing) right down to the skin removes a majority of the problem for long and shorthaired cats. Use of cat laxatives lubricates the remainder so it passes more easily. There is now a palatable high fibre food, Hills Feline Hairball Adult Dry Food, which keeps the hair moving along and not balling up into a furball and being re-presented to your carpet.
Poster Comment: Excerpt from Cat Care Tips page. That food may have made my cat sick, it was the last thing I gave her before she quit eating. Took her to vet today, hadn't eaten since Sunday, she ate a little tuna tonite so I think she'll be okay. I really think there might be something wrong with that food.

I just learned mine tame enough to grab, put something in its mouth, and wash it down with water. The water was the essential componant I was missing earlier today when I found a sticky, soggy remnant of a cat pill stuck to my shirt sleeve as I stood in line at targltes hoping to purchase tuna and a proven favorite dry brand.

When I take my vitamins everyday I give my pooch a fish oil capsule and every other day a vitamin A/D capsule or a little cod liver oil. She waits in anticipation for her daily "treat".

Dak, I feed my cats Nutro brand cat food. Never have any problems with them. DO NOT waste your money on their hairball formula. All it does is make your cat Hork up his hairballs, they do not get passed. Also, we have two long haired cats, and we brush them fairly often. There are a couple of different brushes you should try out to see which one is more comfortable to your pets. Lastly, our cats are huge. One is 23 lbs, and the other is 22 lbs, and they aren't fat, they're huge. Nutro is a very good brand, affordable, and probably better for your pets than most stuff.
My Lab will eat just about anything I hand him or that he can snatch from the garden, including corn off the stalk(thought I had coons until I caught him one day) and digs his own potatoes.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I give mine that hairball treat from time to time, but they love to be brushed so I don't really have a hairball problem. Pills, I always breakup and mix with tuna or canned cat food since that is something they never get otherwise. Only had one cat that figured it out, then it was the old fashioned way, I still have the scars to prove it.

Nutro does kick ass. The key is no byproducts or wastes. Our 2 cats love it (they get Sheba on the side too). Heard this author on the radio a while back but haven't read the book. Supposed to be real good and she knew her [shocking] stuff in the interview...

We had a generic dog in school and us roomates would rotate buying the dog chow. One of them gets cheap and brings home a sack of "store brand" cheap as dirt chow. Dog hoarfed down a big bowl of it and a couple of hours later this enourmous nasty doo just explodes out his ass in the townhouse before he could even give the doggy "I gotta go" look and dance going. Needless to say, nasty dog food didn't enter the picture again and we threw out the rest of that sack...

my next door neighbor has a cat (did you see him when you were here? cheetoh, the orange tabby?) who has a terrible skin condition. he scratches himself to the point of sores and hair loss. they've taken him to 4 vets and they all say keep him indoors. they've tried cortisone shots and antibiotics which only work some and short term. apparently, it's an allergy to something outside. they can't keep him in. he's miserable and bored and shoots out an open door every opportunity. anyway, do you have any ideas of something natural you think might help him? they've actually considered putting him down because he suffers so with the itching. he's young..only a year and a half old.

Boo had some issues here.. Believe it or not, she was fine so long as she had a plant to eat.. She'd literally "prune" the pothos to help her with hariballs and throwing up. We got rid of the plant and noticed her having issues. "Meow Mix" "Indoor Cat" brand fixed it..

My neighbor had a dog like that. Was allergic to grass, trees and bushes. Was ok in the winter, but the poor thing was awful in the summertime. My neighbor went to someone who specially made an allergy shot just for that dog. I have no idea who does that type of thing, I'll have to email her. You may also want to check this site out:

I have a male like that. It was never a problem until a vet gave him a shot at the base of his spine, near his tail(at about 1.5 or 2 yrs old). I've been told it's "flea allergy dermatitis." He's 9 and I have seen enough to get the picture that it's some kind of nerve problem. If you scratch the base of his spine, he starts to compulsively gnaw at the fur on his front legs. He also gnaws the fur at the base of his spine. Both of those areas are like a buzz cut right now. It helps to use Revolution and keep him flea-free. This year, fleas were a little problem during early spring, and I treated him, but then mosquitoes became a problem, and I think they find the bare patch and bother him. He's not "tormented" like he was several years ago, when fleas were a problem in this area, but he does keep those spots gnawed short. Fortunately(thank you God), I have seen exactly zero fleas all summer long this year, for the first time ever. I haven't treated them since mid-spring. he scratches himself to the point of sores and hair loss. they've taken him to 4 vets and they all say keep him indoors. they've tried cortisone shots and antibiotics which only work some and short term.

In most grocery stores around here, you can buy a big can of jack mackerel for 89 cents or a big can of pink salmon for $1.29. One of those cans makes six or eight cat meals, easily. I keep mid-quality dry food down for them and treat them a few times a week to the fish. And I *NEVER* throw away a chicken bone. If you only feed your cats cat food, then the little bits of meat, skin, and bone you throw away could be the most nourishing and tasty meal they ever had in their lives. They go crazy for chicken and gravy.

thank you! i'll print this out and give it to the owners. another thing i've heard might help and that is to bathe him with Miracle II soap. the flea dermatitis was what they were told it was as well, but i think it might be some nerve involvement like with your cat.
