Well it hinges on a technicality as there were only 3 instrumentalists in the band: John Bonham – drums · John Paul Jones – bass guitar, keyboards, mandolin · Jimmy Page – guitars And Robert Plant – vocals - but he did not play an instrument in the band.

I love Rush.......I even have one of Geddy's picks from a show. I was thinking about it the other day and I realized I like a whole lot of three man bands. : ) Hence, thread inspiration. I would have to argue the the Police have been more influential with more play than Rush ever received. Saw them two years ago in CA and that show kicked butt.

Each to their own. I could never tolerate the screechy vocals. I would go with Cream and ZZ Top as my favorite two, and if I had to pick one it would be SURPRISE the greatest ever 3 man Rock Band - Cream. Each of the members were capable of making any band they played with. There was no better drummer than Ginger Baker, Clapton - well what do you say about a living legend?, and Jack Bruce was simply superlative on Bass. I don't see how you beat that line up with anything other than a fantasy band.
If we're going by quality: Rush hands down!

Rush is more unique than the Police.......hence, the Police are more influential and get more airplay on the radio. You can hear the Police in all sorts of bands.......very few sound like Rush because Rush is so unique. It's not a matter of which I prefer, but just look at how many Singles the Police had and how far they went on the charts versus Rush who have always had a loving fan base with much less radio play.

This comes down I guess to a matter of personal taste. Rush may have been innovative but I never found them to be "musical". I did try because I had friends who were big fans, but as far as sheer musicianship I would still go with Cream as they were innovative in adapting Jazz/Blues standards and placing them in a Rockin' Hard coating. And it was not just that each was among the top players of their chosen instruments but the synergy of the group where the sum of the total is greater than the three individually. It was like their reunion concert a couple of years ago in Madison Square Garden - Jack Bruce summed it up "the magic is still there". When they got together and played there was magic.

I think you almost have to have played the instrument yourself to "get it", but listen to Knopfler's work on "Sultans" - the intricate finger work and lighting fast Picking that it took to make that solo riff come out is not lightweight guitar play. Knopfler, despite achieving fame with Dire Straits, gets overlooked and I think it is because he makes the fiendishly difficult look effortless.

============================= For sure dude! Da Boy Can Play. Back in 1972, I was looking for a good 12-string acoustic. I found one for $50 in the paper, and went to check it out. A lady answered the door, and invited me in to look at the guitar in the living room. She said, "This is just collecting dust, I don't want it in the house anymore, and my son says he doesn't want to play guitar anymore. I just want to get rid of it." It played like smooth butter, all 12 strings were crystal clear dreamy, and it hadn't bee played for years. I handed over the $50. On the way out, the lady said, "Oh, and Ricky Nelson gave that guitar to my son when we still lived in California. He used to play it a lot."

I hope you still have it and play it. That is a collectors item and worth considerably more than what you paid for it IF you can prove it was one of Ricky Nelson's Guitars. I've never played 12 string - I started out on a Monkey Ward's electric that was a hand me down from my dad, and I had his old National Triple Neck Steel till I traded it off to get a Browning Fly Rod. I wish I still had that Steel. That actually was the first instrument I learned, haven't played in years, but it was a Fender Single Neck Steel. The Triple Neck was my Dad's and it had belonged to the Steel Guitarist for the "Royal Hawaiians". My Dad bought it from him when he was down and out and wanted drinkin' money. I do still have an old Collector's Guitar, that needs work, that belonged to my Great Uncle Clarence. It's an early electric built on an acoustic body. Nothing famous about it's history - just a rare instrument.

Well we have two rock stations out here that are worth a darn. 96 plays classic rock and 98 plays all the new stuff mixed with some old. I listen to 98 mostly unless they put on chili peppers or Ironman. can't stand that song. I must admit the Santa Clause version was pretty funny.

Well, it's still not to my taste. It turned me off fast and I just never bothered with them after that. I have a copy of one of their double albums which I think has been played once, but not all 4 sides. It's like Eddie Van Halen. I can admire the technical skill with which he plays the instrument, but his playing lacks depth and feeling. So, he's a great guitar technician, but not a Jimi Hendrix or an Eric Clapton. There is an indefinable something which some musicians have and some don't. There are players who, now, are technically as good or better than Jimi Hendrix, but they don't have his soul. Clapton is the same thing. He's not called "Slowhand" for nothing. Ritchie Blackmoore of Deep Purple is twice as fast, and is a great guitarist, but Clapton still has greater emotional depth in his playing. When I think of someone I consider a great musician it is not merely based upon technical expertise with the instrument. There are pianists who are every bit as fast as Oscar Peterson, but they aren't his equal because they don't have that inner difference that makes an Oscar Peterson or a Count Basie. Art and music is to some degree a subjective thing and the interpretation varies from person to person as does personal taste. However, the defining difference between a damn good player and a Great Musician is that ability to transcend the instrument and communicate their soul to the audience. They connect on a level we mere mortals can only admire and stand in awe of.
But to dis rush in terms of not being "musical" is just plain silly.

Eric, you are really cutting the list of singles short--Walking on the Moon, King of Pain, Spirits in the Material World, Invisible Sun, Wrapped Around Your Finger--for the Police......along with all their awards. BRIT Awards1982: Best British Group/1985: Outstanding Contribution To Music Grammy Awards 1980: Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Reggatta de Blanc" 1981: Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Behind My Camel" 1983: Song of the Year for Every Breath You Take, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for Every Breath You Take, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for Synchronicity The Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 10 March 2003. Rush had way more albums.......but much less acclaim for them. Still putting records out and still getting less airplay and acclaim. Like I said before, Rush is a great band and I love them, but they are not as influential as the Police have been and still are. What bands can you state have a distinct Rush influence? I can name at least a dozen with a Police influence off the top of my head and that's what I mean by influential.
Either way, the Police were popular for what, 15 years? They've been disbanded for years whereas Rush keeps pushin' on with still albums and songs that sell to killer levels.

Absolutely, amen. It's whatever knocks the listener out that matters. This is not stand alone great music, but in context, I love the video version.
However, the defining difference between a damn good player and a Great Musician is that ability to transcend the instrument and communicate their soul to the audience. They connect on a level we mere mortals can only admire and stand in awe of.

I agree. I see jack Bruce as the real voice of Cream being as he wrote a goodly portion of their hits along with lyricist Pete Brown. The best 3 piece band in my lifetime. Have to disagree completely here. With distinct punk, reggea and jazz in the Police sound, almost all new wave bands and great number of alternative bands ive credit to the Police as having influenced their music. Even Rush's first top five album, Permanent Waves, included raggae and new wave which was on the heels of the Police.

Pick up a copy of "Just One Night" which was recorded live at the Budokan in Tokyo. It is the definition of the Blues/Rock Genre. The performance of "Blues Power" is alone worth the price of the album, but all 4 sides (2 CDs) is memorable. Clapton doesn't play complexity for complexity's sake. He plays the music he is performing. FWIW the double album I have is 2112. I'm sorry, but they may have their good points but the screechy vocals are not my cup of tea. I'm with ab on this one. The Police I like and still listen to even though most of what I listen to any more is Classical or New Age. However, I suspect our taste in Rock is probably different in other regards. One of my all time favorite groups is "The Outlaws" along with "Lynard Skynard" and "Molly Hatchet". All of which dates me nicely to the mid to late 70's. Not to mention being an avid Santana fan.
I see what you're saying, but I'd challenge you on tunes. Most of Claptons newer stuff is so simplistic from a guitar perspective that you can make the same comments about it.

Hawaiians can sure play a mean steel. They are naturals for that kind of music, and really pour their hearts into it. Beautiful voices too. Elvis loved them. I went in the military in the fall of '72 to avoid being a ground pounder in the draft and sold the Harmony for $50 before I went in. I've kicked myself ever since. I've done some research on the one I had, and I'm almost certain Ricky owned it back in the 60's. No way of proving it, since I never recorded the serial #. Back then, I was into Cat Stevens, Ritchie Havens, James Taylor kinda sounds. Then I went to a Glenn Cambell edition Ovation acoustic with humbickin pickups. Traded it for a Martin D45, which I still have. Haven't played it in over 20 years, but amazingly I still have callouses on the first three fingers. I bite them off and they still come back - LoL. I gotta get that thing out and bang on it again. Like riding a bicycle ..

They don't mention it. But, let's be honest, Permanent Waves introduced raggae and new wave into Rush that wasn't there before. I agree that Peart is the master of technique...but Copeland has groove. Both Geddy and Sting are epic song writers IMO. I see similarities on concepts. I really like Geddy's literature inspired lyrics. I equally like Synchronicity, a concept album written on the work of Jung. For me, it's not either or, but just different. Rush is better in some ways and the Police are better in some ways.
I'm a huge Rush fan and I've never even heard them mention Sting or the Police as any kind of influence in their music.

How did Eric Clapton get his nickname, Slowhand? The Yardbirds’ manager, Giorgio Gomelsky, gave Eric Clapton the nickname “Slowhand” in early 1964. The Yardbirds rhythm guitarist, Chris Dreja, recalled that whenever Eric Clapton broke a guitar string during a concert, Eric would stay on stage and replace it. The English audiences would wait out the delay by doing a “slow handclap”. I agree. I see jack Bruce as the real voice of Cream being as he wrote a goodly portion of their hits along with lyricist Pete Brown. The best 3 piece band in my lifetime. I have all of Jack Bruces' albums---great stuff. And as a measure of their influence, and I think this does surprise some people, Cream only produced 3 studio albums while they were together. The last album (Goodbye Cream) was produced after the group disbanded from cuts they had already recorded prior to disbanding or were cut from the other albums.
I would go with Cream and ZZ Top as my favorite two, and if I had to pick one it would be SURPRISE the greatest ever 3 man Rock Band - Cream. Each of the members were capable of making any band they played with. There was no better drummer than Ginger Baker, Clapton - well what do you say about a living legend?, and Jack Bruce was simply superlative on Bass. I don't see how you beat that line up with anything other than a fantasy band.

Interesting, while I don't have a source as it was on the old "American Top 40" with Casey Kasem, his story was that it was given him as a nickname by other guitar players because he was notorious for being slow in changing his hand position on the guitar neck. So, the joke was that he could stretch a note further than anyone else. I can understand why he might not want to give that as a reason for the nickname.

Synchronicity II I mean there's a reason why you'd find tons more women at a Sting/Police concert, eh. Definitely in The Spirit of Radio. The driving little beat in the back is totally reggae influence. You will note the lyrical complexity within Synch I and II if you are familiar with Carl Jung and his work. Ghost in the Machine was inspired Arthur Koestler's writing. Perhaps you are less familiar with the literature that inspires the song writing you deem to only extend to a handful of songs? To be fair, a song becomes pop oriented when it is popular among a very large radio audience. One could easily say that 'Closer to the Heart' is a pop oriented song. Sting is still hot after all these years. Truth be told, Geddy never really did me the same way. : ) Truly, I wasn't a big Police fan until I went and saw them live, but ever since then I've appreciated them much more.
Otherwise, let me ask you, apart from some relatively minor undertones of reggae in Freewill, which other tune on that album do you think has a "reggae" sound to it?

Actually, I'd concur somewhat with you. But, being from Austin, I watched him come up in the clubs and had a blast back in the day. Double Trouble (Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon) have done some great stuff since Stevie passed.

It all boils down to sources and most of them are not true so I regard them as FWIW. E.g. Through the years I've heard 3 different stories on how/why George Harrison wrote "Don't Bother Me." All 3 may be wrong. And this is not an isolated case at all as I've heard massive numbers of stories about various musicians and say the meaning of a song or whatever and then I hear another story that contradicted the first. So which story do I believe? It's worth the ear tickling that's all. You, or rather your memory, could be right for all I know. But I tend to not believe it as Clapton's speed back in 60's, early 70's was not an issue.
