200 Cows Die in Portage County Investigators are working to determine what caused the death of 200 cows in Portage County. Posted: 9:57 PM Jan 15, 2011 Reporter: Jennifer Kliese Email Address: jennifer.kliese@wsaw.com

The 200 dead cattle were discovered on a farm field on 4th street in Amherst. Today, the bodies were taken out in semi-loads to be disposed of.

The Portage County Sheriff's Department says the animals died of a virus that causes respiratory and reproductive problems.

The owner has been working with a veterinarian, who couldn't be reached for comment today. Samples from the dead animals have been sent to Madison for testing.

Investigators say there is no threat to people or other animals. The Portage County Humane Society is investigating the cow deaths.

You don't just 'discover' a herd of 200 DEAD cattle. Infected herds don't expire all at the same time, but over a period of time.

The owner would have discovered individual cattle expiring long before the entire heard expired in cases of virile outbreaks.

Something REALLY screwy here.
