There are two kinds of people who are basically disposable: unattractive women and economically unsuccessful men.

In college I knew a woman, who verged on beautiful, who mentioned to me once that seven guys had asked her out one weekend. I knew another one, who was very attractive, who was very popular – I believe over 30 guys asked her out.

I also knew several who weren’t attractive, and never got asked out. Attractiveness (and friendliness) was what made the popular women popular. The unattractive ones didn’t stand a chance, although I suppose unattractive guys finally asked them out.

For men, those who are economically unsuccessful are disposable. If a man cannot support himself, no one else will, so he can just become homeless and die. This is why, when the economy goes bad and men lose their jobs, the suicide rate goes up for them. They’re on their own.

In the past, unattractive women could be nurses or schoolteachers. I’m not sure what else was open to them. Secretaries. These days, women, because of Affirmative Action and other laws, have the traditional male role now open to them, so they now have access to high-paying, fairly easy inside jobs.

Yet, at the same time, access to the traditional female role is not open to men. I’m sure there are a few financially successful women who are open to it, but if there are, it’s just a handful, and I’ve never met one.

So what happens is that an unattractive woman can now support herself with a high-paying job, but a economically unsuccessful man is still on his own. The woman has become less disposable, but not the man.

Men in general have always been more disposable than women, apparently because women are the ones who give birth. But now, the imbalance has become even worse.

Can such a balance continue? I don’t think I can. Something will give, sooner or later, and then things will change. But I expect things to get a lot worse before they get better.

Interesting but you did not follow the path to the depths of origin. We live in a society where superficialities of appearance and material gain, however achieved, are regarded as desirable. That speaks volumes as to the level of rot in our culture. Beauty is, and has always been, admired. And its popularity lies in our sense of aesthetics. That does not mean though that it is an absolute and the only measure of worth. Anyone who falls prey to that narrow of an interpretation is destined for much unhappiness.

Wealth in an of itself is not bad. When gained by honest endeavor and accomplishment it is at it best a measure of success, and successful men are always desirable to women. It is a survival trait as successful men are best able to provide for the welfare of progeny.

However, and again, wealth is not an absolute and when gained by ill means it leads not to success and happiness but to to despair and despondency resulting from the weight of consicience - knowing that it was not earned and not deserved on merit. And that is why the idle rich despise the successful man or woman because it reminds them of their lack of accomplishment and that their wealth is not the produce of their own labor, but merely something handed to them. Thus one hears terms such as "Neuvo Riche" which is in its reality a measure of jealousy and resentment towards those who have achieved by those who have not.

And so supericialities when used as a measure of worth can be seen to ultimately lead toward unhappiness. Thus the rich criminal is always unhappy, and knows not why, and the woman, or man, who relies upon their physical appearance as the measure of their worth is destined for sadness.

There is some truth though in the old waggish comment that: Beauty may only be skin deep, but ugly goes clear to the bone." Beauty often reflects the inner spirit, and inward beauty can be found to reflect in outward appearance. The example for which is the "plain" woman whose outward reflection is found attractive because the inward spirit shines through the outward appearance. Likewise a beautiful woman can take on the aspects of ugliness when there is disease in the soul, and rapidly the beauty fades into dissipation. As well the ugly man who is successful, treats others well, is often found to have no shortage of female friendship as, in a different way, but akin, the character of the inner man becomes reflected in the outward appearance and success itself becomes the measure of appearance - thus one sometimes sees the less than handsome man with a beauteous companion. Again, as with women, outward ugliness being a reflection of the inner being is a reflection of rot within.

So, superficialities are at best a wayward indicator and do not always accurately reflect reality.

This is a good read. And I see much truth in it.

The part that gets my attention is this: "Men in general have always been more disposable than women, apparently because women are the ones who give birth. But now, the imbalance has become even worse."

I sense this imbalance may have something to do with discouraging people to pro-create.

I sense this imbalance may have something to do with discouraging people to pro-create.

A worse imbalance is that women have children on their own and pretend they're not dependent on the government (marrying the government) or are parasites on their parents.

A single woman with children has never been economically or socially viable in any culture in history.

Robert Heinlein suggested, and I tend to agree, that you can kill off a sizable chunk of the male population and still have the human race survive and that is what makes them expendable. Women have a monopoly on child bearing, and require protection while with child and in raising them.

This makes some good points, but I dont think any change is needed.
Natural societal change takes care of that, as aesthetics change. Remember when hairy chests were considered attractive? Pale obese women used to be considered attractive. Now men shave their bodies and women tan themselves.

Personality also has a big impact on aesthetics.
I have a big crush on a lesbian co-worker who looks like a teenage boy (she's in her 30's). Very short hair, little or no makeup, baggy clothes. But she has a great personality. She's happy, sociable, fun, smart. Despite her appearance, her personality makes a big difference.
Women would probably react the same way to a feminine man with a great personality.

Men invent, discover, create and fix. They die doing so.

Women follow in their footsteps and then whine and complain and try to destroy by making things "safe." Appreciattion and understanding of men? Nope.

I also knew several who weren’t attractive, and never got asked out. Attractiveness (and friendliness) was what made the popular women popular. The unattractive ones didn’t stand a chance, although I suppose unattractive guys finally asked them out.

That sounds like the result of confidence, or the lack thereof. It's easy to be confident when one is considered "beautiful".

I've known (not "known" in the biblical sense) some physically attractive women that I wouldn't give the time of day to if I was looking at my watch at the time that they asked me.

OTOH, I've known some that while they were not 10's, were attractive because of their demeanor and friendliness, and because they were still pretty and feminine. I screwed up with a few of them. I regret that. Women like that are hard to find, and I've pretty much given up that search.

I always get a good laugh from women that are considered "beautiful", bitching because they can't get dates. They assume it's because we assume that they are already attached. They assume wrong. We can generally recognize skanks and know to avoid them, because they are nothing but high maintenance trouble in a pretty package.
