Government shuts down SMS January 27th, 2011 at 10:29pm | 1 comment Tags: Egypt | Mobinil | police | SMS | Telecommunications | twitter There were reports circulating among Egyptian activists that the govt was about to shut down SMS, to continue with its crackdown on communications and the flow of information about protests.
Only few mins ago, I tried to send out a text message and it failed, and so did my mother, and so did other friends. Im getting similar confirmation from other activists and journalists.
I called up Mobinil and the customer service claimed there were no problems whatsoever.

Facebook, Twitter and Blackberry 3G network are blocked. SMS is either blocked or very very slow at sending ATM. It says it is sent, but the receiver does not get any sms, nor do I get a delivery sms.
