Title: Probiotic question

I recently started taking a probiotic called Align, for some bad IBS I'm having. I choose it after reading that bifidobacterium infantis has been shown to help with IBS.
However Align has a patented form called "bifidobacterium infantis 35624", and the Align literature says users need to keep taking the stuff, forever I guess, or loose the benifits it provides.
It was my understanding that probiotics colonized the gut and would remain after stopping the probiotic.

I'm wondering if Align might be some genetically modified bug (since it's patented) and maybe it can not reproduce, requiring the user to keep buying.

Anyone here know about Align, or if probiotics are GM?

I don't know, but I suggest that you read the post by Tatarewicz, because it seems to address your condition.

Align is a Procter and Gamble patent. According to Wiki, Bifidobacterium infantis means that the strain was first isolated from a breast-fed infant by Henry Tissier. Tissier found that bifidobacteria are dominant in the gut flora of breast-fed babies and he observed clinical benefits from treating diarrhea in infants with bifidobacteria. So, since the strain derives from breast fed infants you can't reproduce it.

I've used probiotics in the past but never continued use after countering antibiotic effects. Having no experience with IBS, I can't say one way on treating this condition long term.

Thanks.
I took alot of antibiotics last year (medical misadventure). I'm sure that, combined with recent intense stress at work, are what's inflaming the IBS.

Guess I'll keep taking the stuff and hope some GMO alien dosnt burst out of my gut.

Danone B.L. I'm going to throw this out there despite most men scoffing at the idea, but yoga is great at both alleviating stress and getting the innards in top working order. : )

I'm not flexable enough for yoga. I have tried meditation, and that works to a point.
When it feels like Chuck Norris kicked me in the gut, something more than meditation is needed.
I'm slowly feeling better than I did. Maybe the bifidos are helping.

Yoga improves flexibility..plus a guy in a yoga class is the minority in a room full of flexible women. Consider the possibilities. : )

Anyways, I was just throwing it out there for consideration. It sounds like you may have it bad and I hope you find some remedy soon Dillo.

I know Bayer has a probiotic on the market too. Colon-something. Comes in a purple box. I have to check on this product everyday. You would think I could remember the name. Sigh.

I recommend yogurt. All natural being the best. There is a good one called Chobani. Has 5 active cultures and natural sugars rather then corn syrup. I had a friend with chronic IB. My recommendation of yogurt worked for him.

Stop that you two. Can you imagine what kind of images that sends through a poor boy's mind?

Naughty Dillo.

I hate to say it but I know of a forum set up just for that. A friend of mine set it up and last time I looked it had over 5000 members.
