Ann Coulter said she thinks there should be more journalists put in jail during her appearance at the annual CPAC conference on Saturday.

Coulter's comments came during a response to a question from a woman in the audience. The woman initially asked Coulter why she and other Republicans had championed free elections in Iraq but were warning about them in Egypt.

"You don't go around disturbing countries where you have a loyal ally," Coulter responded.

"What is more important though to American values--being friends with israel still or knowing there are jailed dissidents and journalists [in Egypt]?" the woman asked.

"What do you mean knowing that there are jailed journalists?" Coulter said. "I think there should be more jailed journalists." This prompted a huge round of applause from the crowd.

Ann Coulter said she thinks there should be more journalists put in jail

Coulter is a big government Republican, not to mention an idiot. Her and big government Republicans like her appear to believe that the only journalists being arrested would be those that disagree with her political point of view. In reality those being arrested would depend upon which party is in power and whose ox is being gored.

A government that can arrest journalists in the way that she wants can arrest her and anyone else for saying things that those in power feel threaten the government in some way. She doesn't think there are liberals who would love to use this type of power to arrest her or Rush or Glenn Beck or Bill O'Reilly or (name your favorite Big government Republican here)? Like I said, she's an idiot.

Good point. It could be that she and those like her push this type of government power in order to do away with those that do not fall into that category. If given this power I can easily see the government expanding the definition of the word journalist to include local talk radio personalities, bloggers, owners of political forums, etc., etc. Anyone and everyone who doesn't toe the government line.

That may be just what those of her ilk want and the useful idiots that cheer her on are just that - useful idiots with poor critical thinking skills.

Let's turn the question around: Is there anything, under any circumstances, that a reporter could say to the masses, that ought to result in sanctions?

Disclosure of classified information, that he knew was classified, and that he was the first person to disclose publicly?

Calling an election for a certain candidate, before the polls in that state are even closed, and even when the votes at the time tilt the other way?

Libel?

Disclosing private information, e.g. the name and address of a private citizen, who is acting as a whistleblower, witness, or watchdog?

Passing along incorrect information about guns, gun laws, or gun usage, that he has been repeatedly corrected upon before, but which he continues to misrepresent?

Dependence on an obviously fraudulent document to make charges against a public official, even after the authenticity of the document has been publicly questioned?

Or, instead, is there absolutely nothing whatsoever that a journalist could possibly ever do that should properly result in sanctions?

And to truly practice what she preaches, she should submit to imprisonment at a women's detention center for 10 years.

I believe that the USSC has already answered this question in New York Times Co. v. United States.

Calling an election for a certain candidate, before the polls in that state are even closed, and even when the votes at the time tilt the other way?

Sorry. I am of the opinion that people using the free market have the ability to hurt the companies the journalists work for much more than anything the government could do. We are already seeing that today with the decline of print news and it is due to just the type of stuff that you mention.

While it sounds good to jail journalists for doing and saying things you don't like, it will lead to abuse.

Journalists aided and abetted the illegal invasion of Iraq. They covered up all evidenxe linking 911 to Israel. If Bush and Cheney deserve jail those publishers deserve to lose their stock in their companies. And the journalists who knowingly lied us into war also deserve some punishment.

As to Ann Coulter, she was making a flippant remark to deflect the question from Israel.

Or, instead, is there absolutely nothing whatsoever that a journalist could possibly ever do that should properly result in sanctions?

Only 2 cases should ever result in sanctions: Knowingly telling or propagating a known lie. And unless it results in loss of life it should only result in a financial penalty, but that can be up to and including all known assets, and a fine beyond that.

Otherwise it is the responsibility of the government to protect its own information. The most major leaks, the Pentagon Papers comes to mind, were planned disinformation operations. So, it should not be possible to prosecute a reporter for releasing classified information which was intentionally leaked.

And we already have laws against libel. We do not live, yet, in a Police State, although it is getting close, so we should not have Police State laws and prosecutions.

The other case which could or should involve sanctions is where releasing information endangers, knowingly, the life of another. Where no one died as a result the sanctions should be civil only. If loss of life resulted then "Book'im Danno".
