... I use G3s at work ... all of 300Mhz processor and 128M RAM - can't think of a single good thing to say about them ... at home I have a very old iMac that I use on side for the iTunes and the Adobe Suite it has installed, the sound is good ... nice computer if you're not in a hurry
I'm on a tower now, but have owned an iMac in the past. The one thing I do not like about an iMac is that both monitor and CPU are housed in the same box which is both a blessing and a pain. If one goes out you have to take the whole mess into a repair shop. However it does take up less footprint on your desk. I personally would take a Mac Mini over an iMac unless you are going to be doing more than e-mail, posting, surfing, routine word processing and spread sheets in which case you should be looking at a tower anyway. Otherwise you'll pry my Mac from my cold dead fingers. It is more stable and problem free than any Windows box.
The new iMacs run at about 8 to 10 times (or better) the speed of a G3. In its day it was a good computer, but the G3 is now about 4 generations behind the current iteration.
Thanks - that's what I wanted to know. An iMac will soon enough be here. I'll just have to figger out how to get the MS Ergonomic Keyboard to work. That apple keyboard and mouse look totally cheesy.

Small world. Who would have guessed? Mac from the beginning. I have a dual core 20 inch iMac But they work beautifully. You will soon prefer them both.
Never owned a Mac of any kind personally, but I did just get my daughter a top of line macbook pro and she is just thrilled with it. Never freezes up, fast as lightning, great battery life, etc. Everyone I ever knew that owned a mac has had nothing but great things to say about them.

Yes, that's what I'm hearing from everyone. Once you've tried Mac, you'll never go back. I guess that I'm ready to take the plunge.
Everyone I ever knew that owned a mac has had nothing but great things to say about them.

I agree. Apple tried to keep a lid on it with their first generation iPad in order to preserve their sales of notebook computers, at double the price, but to no avail. As others come out with full featured tablet computers they are going to be forced to relent or lose market share. They're just going to have to get used to having to sell a tablet for 500 or less that supports a USB Port and runs big computer software or lose out to the cut rate tablets which will eat into their notebook sales anyway. I the consumer say GOOD.

Oh, some tablets, such as the 'Droids, likely already have a USB connection, but Apple didn't see fit to put one on their first generation iPad. The only way they'll ever sell one to me is if I can hook up external storage or to a printer. All the other cool stuff is for kids. I would not mind a book reader, but I can buy a tablet that will do more than be a reader for a whole lot less than an iPad. Apple is going to have to give me a reason to buy one.

Have an Intel iMac and a Power Mac G5 as a file server and love them both. Echo above sentiment, you'll pry them from my cold, dead fingertips. PC/Windows keyboard will work just fine. Use an Apple Keyboard at the house and a PC one on my Mac at work. Num Lock is on by default. F12 to eject DVD/CD. The Windows key is the same as the Apple/Command key on an Apple keyboard. Instead of Command + C and Command V to copy and paste, it would be Windows + C and Windows + V. Prefer a PC Mouse to the Apple one. With any computer these days, not just the Macs, I would strongly suggest an external to go along with it. Pricing is good on the externals these days. Leopard/Snow Leopard/Lion (when-ever it's released) will all have Time Machine which makes backups just about idiot proof. Should your HDD fail, you can reinstall the OS and then have Time Machine essentially restore everything else for you just as you left it. I'm also seriously contemplating an online service like Carbonite for pictures and videos. Things I can't replace if the house burns down.

Unless you want to do iPhone development, I wouldn't buy a Mac. Linux is free, no need to buy another computer, and it is the most secure OS out there period. Mac's are good computers but they ARE overpriced way too much. I am getting a mini-Mac only to do iPhone development, otherwise I would never buy such a closed system that is overpriced. Yeah I know, the iPhone is a closed system too, but I can't ignore the fact it is the best selling smart mobile phone in the world.

They will indeed hurt laptop sales, but not phones and not desktops. Smart phones will be the biggest platform for mobile computing in the world, with tablets being far behind, while desktops will continue to be the low cost, fast, expandable solution for businesses and homes. Notebooks will still survive I think as a mobile desktop replacement, but the lighter versions will die out due to competition from tablets.

Thanks much for all the thoughts, opinions, advice, and hints here. ubuntu is the only other OS not mentioned, that I know of. And their price (free) is very do-able.

ubuntu is the only other OS not mentioned, that I know of.

I ran Ubuntu for about a year. I still prefer the Mac OS X but Ubuntu is preferable to Windows and is very user friendly compared to older Linux set-ups. There is a version of Open Office for Ubuntu Machines and it is efficient enough to run on a slower computer. The drawbacks are that you still need to learn a lot about the OS to do some of things that are point and click on a Mac. While I haven't used it since Version 7.04 it is, by all accounts, getting easier to use with each generation. The other drawback is software availability. There is a lot in the way of basic productivity software but video and graphics software is spotty.

Personally, I think we are going to see a convergence between tablets and phones. As it stands now I don't use a cellphone for two reasons: 1. It is an unnecessary luxury and I would rather spend the money elsewhere. 2. I refuse to put a microwave emitter/receiver next to my head. Too many links showing up cancers and other problems. The human body is not designed as a microwave friendly interface. What I expect to see happen is a little larger tablet with a slimline telephone style hand piece (wire connected) that melds right into the tablet and/or a connection port for a headset, and probably both.

I like Ubuntu and were it not for the fact that I prefer the ease of use of the Mac OS I would probably still be running on it. However, I use a computer as a tool to do work and I don't care to be a geek. To get the most out of Ubuntu you have to be willing to take the time to learn the geek stuff that really makes it functional and as it stands now I'm not willing to take the time.

The one problem with the iPhone, and its copycats, is that the screen and keyboard are too small to really make it functional except for teenage girls who live on the phone. The Tablet can, and should, perform all the functions of the phone and a small laptop. With the ability to plant it in a docking station and add a full function keyboard it has the potential to have a lot of utility as the all purpose information appliance.
These things are going to explode.

The reason smart phones will rule mobile computing is precisely due to their size and price. Cheap, you can hold it with one hand, and it fits in your pocket. Tablets will be great for viewing pictures, video conferencing, and just general surfing the web, but never as a reguraly used phone.

I am no teenage girl and I use it probably more then they do! Yes, if you have bad eyes then the iPhone is not for you, but that is not a issue the majority of people in the world have a problem with.
