After reading your title, this is where my mind went immediately.
I was always amusd by this one because before the fight Norton said, "I've always done really good against Caucasians."
"Irish" Jerry Cooney. IIRC he went 12 rounds w/Ali. Chuck Wepner (The Bayonne Bleeder) was a better fighter. Wepner was Stallones' inspiration for the Rocky movie. I was quite a boxing buff once upon a time. I saw Ali beat Zora Foley in the Garden, and my first date w/my wife was to see Jerry Quarry beat Buster Mathas in '69.
Quarry had about 100 fights too many. He didn't even make it to 55 before he died of being punch-drunk. He would have done a lot better as a cruiserweight.

He would have done a lot better as a cruiserweight. You're right about that. He was app 190 lbs after dinner. But there wasn't - and still isn't - the bucks fighting as a cruiser. IIRC Bob Foster, he of the big punch, was a middle weight fighting heavies. Billy Conn is the classic example of fighting up when he had Joe Lewis beat until he got cocky.
