LEADERS WITH FAITH

Benjamin Franklin was 81 years old in 1787 when he attended the Constitutional Convention. He spoke these words there:

"In the days of our contest with Great Britain when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayer in this room for divine protection. Our prayers, sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of superintending providence in our favor. To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity to establish our Nation. And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? Do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance? I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, it is probable that a new Nation cannot rise without his aid. We have been assured, sir, in the sacred writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that built it. I therefore beg leave to move that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of heaven and its blessings on our deliberations be held in this assembly every morning before we proceed to any business.''

Thomas Jefferson is known for having some doubts about Christianity, but he was still a great student of scripture and honored Christ as his greatest teacher and mentor. On the front of his well-worn Bible Jefferson wrote,

"I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus. I have little doubt that our whole country will soon be rallied to the unity of our creator and, I hope, to the pure doctrine of Jesus also.''

George Washington, the Father of our Nation, said in his farewell speech of September 19, 1796,

"It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible. Of all the dispositions and habits that lead to political prosperity, our religion and morality are the indispensable supporters. Let us with caution indulge the supposition, "that is, the idea that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that our national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.''

From his prayer book:

"Oh, eternal and everlasting God, direct my thoughts, words and work. Wash away my sins in the emaculate blood of the lamb and purge my heart by thy Holy Spirit. Daily, frame me more and more in the likeness of thy son, Jesus Christ, that living in thy fear, and dying in thy favor, I may in thy appointed time obtain the resurrection of the justified unto eternal life. Bless, O Lord, the whole race of mankind and let the world be filled with the knowledge of thee and thy son, Jesus Christ.''

There are many more such amazing quotes from our Founding Fathers, but I think these suffice to show that many of our early leaders believed that what made a people great was not really the form of government or the natural resources it possessed, but the heart of the leaders and people. Samuel said a similar thing in 1 Samuel 12:14-15.

But the real purpose of loving God and serving him is not to have a great country. It is because we have a great savior, and we want a relationship with him. Once we have that, other great things will flow from it. Maybe even greatness and decency in a country. Warren Baldwin Jr.

I eschew religion, but am not without spirituality.

I was struck once while watching a movie in which the child said to her father:

"You can't see fairies unless you believe in them."

I want either less corruption or more opportunity to participate in it. Ashleigh Brilliant

====================================

Thankfully, America's Founding Fathers saw enough 'fairies' to cut the chains of the King of England.

The Rothschild's have taken back most of that ground, and killed most of that faith.
