A Naperville man is out $200,000 after wiring money to an online girlfriend he didn’t realize was a fake.

The 48-year-old man called Naperville police Wednesday to ask for help rescuing the woman, who he believed had been kidnapped in London, police said.

He told police he started the online relationship 2 1/2 years ago. Since then, he had wired about $200,000 total to several different bank accounts in Nigeria, Malaysia, England and the United States, police said. An identification card the woman provided to him ended up being a sample driver’s license from Florida.

Police said when an officer told the man the “woman” he was sending money to didn’t exist, he “was in disbelief.”

I know idiots this stupid. Willing to believe all sorts of nonsense about someone they know nothing about and help them like this, while not trusting people they do know and have always been good to them and their family. I see it as justice, they get what they deserve.

God is always good!

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

Is there a non-death Darwin Award?

Like forced vasectomies prior to the age of consent? Who's gonna pay for it? Oh, right, the rapists and other winners of the Gene Wars! ?

Excuse me if that sounds crazy, I'm still getting used to this new keyboard.

"I am not one of those weak-spirited, sappy Americans who want to be liked by all the people around them. I don’t care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do. The important question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it." - William S Burroughs

Yes, this scam preys on rich lonely people. A local friend asked my wife about an online matchmaking contact she received. A web search on the "guys" name turned up this very scam. First they send a pic of someone very attractive and it goes from there. Plans to meet in person are thrwarted at the last minute by something, and the victim is asked to send money for which they are praised as a life-saving hero. And it goes on and on from there.

Some people will believe the world is flat if it means being in love. It's the romantics that fall for this type thing. The majority of us who wouldn't fall for it are simply not romantic enough.

Nigeria

What a fricktard.

"If ever this vast country is brought under a single government, it will be one of the most extensive corruption, indifferent and incapable of a wholesome care over so wide a spread of surface. This will not be borne, and you will have to choose between reform and revolution. If I know the spirit of this country, the one or the other is inevitable." - Thomas Jefferson
