About 100 people rallied at the Manitoba Law Courts building in Winnipeg on Friday, expressing anger about comments made by a judge during a sexual assault sentencing.

Carrying placards with statements such as, "No such thing as implied consent," the protesters also stormed inside the building chanting and calling for the resignation of Justice Robert Dewar. They also called for Dewar to come down and speak to them before being escorted out by security.

The rally wrapped up after about an hour, at 1 p.m.

Dewar said "sex was in the air" when he spared a man jail time by handing him a two-year conditional sentence last week instead and allowed him to remain free in the community.

During the sentencing, Dewar also commented on the way the woman was dressed and her actions the night she was forced to have sex by a man in the woods along a dark highway outside Thompson, Man., in 2006.

The man and a friend met the woman, who is now 25, and her girlfriend earlier that night outside a bar under what Dewar called "inviting circumstances."

'I think all rapists should be treated like a murderer because they take a part of your life.'—Victim in 2006 sexual assault

The judge pointed out the victim and her friend were dressed in tube tops, no bras, and high heels and noted they were wearing plenty of makeup.

Dewar called the man a "clumsy Don Juan" who may have misunderstood what the victim wanted.

The sentence was delivered last week in Thompson. Victim calls herself a prisoner

The victim, who spoke to CBC News on Friday, did not attend the rally but was aware of it and grateful to those who took part.

She said she remains traumatized from the sexual assault and is afraid to go places. (Department of Justice Canada)

"I feel like I'm a prisoner in my own home and I can't trust anyone," she said, adding she is extremely upset with Dewar's comments.

"I don't think what he said was right. We were young and we were dressed classy. For him to say that the way we looked was basically asking for it is wrong and makes me angry."

The woman said she went into the bushes off the road to urinate and the man followed her in.

"I wanted out of there and he wouldn't stop," she said about the attack, which left her covered in bruises.

"I had to do what I had to do to survive because I was out there alone. I wanted to get away."

She agrees with protesters who called for Dewar's resignation, saying, "I think he should not judge again."

Then she added, "I think all rapists should be treated like a murderer because they take a part of your life." Comments will discourage victims

Lorraine Parrington, who co-ordinates the sexual assault crisis program at Klinic, a community health centre in Winnipeg, said Dewar's remarks show there needs to be more education about how women should be treated in sexual assault cases.

'I was appalled. I was outraged. I was disheartened.'—Lorraine Parrington, counsellor

Fewer than 10 per cent of sexual assault cases are actually reported and Parrington worries Dewar's comments will discourage future victims from coming forward.

"I'd like to say I was shocked. Unfortunately, I'm not after doing this work for lots of years," she said. "But I was appalled. I was outraged. I was disheartened."

Men have to learn women can change their minds, and no, at any point in an encounter, means no, she said.

"People have a right to change their mind. If I decide that I want to be engaged in certain sexual behaviour with somebody I can do that and I'm allowed to say, 'Stop, I don't want to do it any more.' That needs to be respected."

Angela Senyshyn, a burlesque dancer who was at the rally, told CBC News she dresses how she likes and there is no invitation to anything.

"I don't get dressed, you know, for a night out on the town in hopes to get raped."

Just because you saw the invitation does not mean you were invited to the party.

True.
But to avoid "party crashers", it's best to only invite those one wishes to attend.

Rape is a horrible crime, and never excusable, but I have less sympathy for a "cock-tease" than for a nun.

The trick is to dress with the idea of a limited invitation. Not everyone draws the line in the same place.

It's interesting how clothes can actually increase arousal, while nudity decreases it. There is a book called "Importance of Wearing Clothes" about this.
When I'm at a nudest resort, I enjoy looking at the women but I dont get horny for them. If a woman is dressed provocatively, it can be arousing.

Maybe the Ferengi of Star Trek had it right. Keep women nude to prevent men lusting after them.

I am amazed at how clueless many of them are.

Women have no idea what goes on in men's minds.

Then there's the matter of individual differences, one's mood at the moment and probably other factors. For some aggressive-by-nature men once a hormonal cascade is triggered by sexy dress, advertising, looks then an emotional state of mind takes over from the rational.

Women also need o keep in mind that there's the odd totally-out-of-control types that even authorities let loose on a community:

The search is over for a high risk sex offender wanted on Canada wide warrants in connection with the abduction of a 10-year-old girl.

John Francis Dionne, 43, was arrested Friday evening by members of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) without incident.

He was apprehended at a residence in Linden, AB just after 6 p.m. thanks to a tip from the public.

"More than a dozen officers and an analyst were able to access a bunch of information and were very close to where the suspect was when the tip came in," said Staff Sgt. Tom Hanson with ALERT.

"We were able to go in and arrest him quite quickly after we received that tip."

Dionne now faces several charges including kidnapping, child abduction, assault, robbery and impersonating a police officer.

A vehicle was also seized from the residence and it is being sent in for forensic examination.

The girl was shopping with her father at Deerfoot Mall Thursday evening when the two became separated.

That's when the victim was approached by a man who said he was a police officer and that she was shoplifting.

The victim initially went with the offender, but became suspicious and started questioning him, telling him she did not want to go with him. It was at this point that the offender picked her up and carried her to his vehicle.

The offender drove north out of the city toward Airdrie where he was pulled over for a traffic violation on Highway 567 by a member of the RCMP. At the time of the traffic stop, the girl had not been reported missing.

The victim was sitting in the front seat of the offender's van, but was too scared to say anything. The offender was issued a ticket and drove away.

Police say a short time later he drove to a nearby fast food restaurant and let the victim out of the van. That's when she called 911.

She was taken to Alberta Children's Hospital for a precautionary check and has since been reunited with her parents. Police say it appears she suffered emotional but not physical injuries.

RCMP are now reviewing what information the traffic officer had access to when he pulled Dionne over.

"If there is something that comes out of a review that indicates that there's an opportunity to improve, absolutely we will," said Staff Sgt. Todd Zelensky with the Calgary Police Service's high-risk offender program.

Meanwhile, officials are praising the actions of the 20-year RCMP member who stopped the vehicle.

"Because of the actions he took, that probably disrupted Mr. Dionne's plan and what may have happened after that," said Insp. Grant Miller with the Calgary Police Service.

Dionne has a history of sexual offences and violence against females as young as 10 years old and is HIV positive.

Residents in the town of Linden became concerned when he moved into the town of 750 last fall. At the time, RCMP issued a warning to the community.

A court date for Dionne has not yet been set.

Well put.

And a dirty mind does not exclude a pure heart - depending of course upon your definition of purity. ;-)

A man has to know his limitations. Men should have self control enough to not turn their dirty thoughts into reality. Some men dont have that.
I definitely have a dirty mind (as is obvious from my posts), but have no desire to harm anyone.

Rape is usually not even about sex. It's about violence. A violent man might beat another man, but rape a woman. Both are assaults.

There is another kind of rape. Horny-and-mistaken man thinks he's being offered sex, and decides to take it despite her protests. It's still an assault.

My father taught me early:

When a woman says "No" it means "No".

When a woman says yes you're a fool if you don't take her up on it.

Coming Through The Rye. Chorus. O Jenny is all wet, poor body, Jenny is seldom dry: She draggled all her petticoats, Coming through the rye!

Coming through the rye, poor body, Coming through the rye, She draggled all her petticoats, Coming through the rye!

Should a body meet a body Coming through the rye, Should a body kiss a body, Need a body cry?

Should a body meet a body Coming through the glen, Should a body kiss a body, Need the world know?

Should a body meet a body Coming through the grain, Should a body kiss a body, The thing is a body's own.
