Irish election: Fianna Fáil government routed, according to exit poll

Ireland's most dominant political party, Fianna Fáil, is on the road to a historic and devastating defeat in the republic's general election.

Just months after accepting an EU/IMF bailout, the government is likely to finish in fourth place behind a resurgent Labour party and a slew of independent candidates.

The scale of Fianna Fáil's losses is so great that a number of high-profile ministers, including finance minister Brian Lenihan, who negotiated the bailout, are in danger of losing their seats. His outgoing ministerial colleague Mary Hanafin also faces the possibility of being unseated in her Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown constituency.

Fine Gael is now poised to form a government, possibly even as a single party, its director of elections, Phil Hogan, told RTÉ Radio. "Anybody that writes [us] off so early in the day... I think they'll probably get a fright as the day wears on," he said. If the party fails to win an overall majority, however – which an exit poll from RTÉ suggested would be the outcome earlier in the day – it is likely to seek to form a coalition with the Irish Labour Party. Either way, Enda Kenny is certain to be elected Taoiseach.

According to RTÉ, Fine Gael took 36.1% of the vote, with Labour coming second with 20.5%. Fianna Fáil support is put at just 15.1%, by far its worst general election result, and will mean a massive loss of seats across the country – including a wipeout in the capital.

Sinn Féin's support is put at 10.1% – again a record in the Irish Republic – while the Greens are on 2.7%, which could see the party save some seats despite predictions they would be wiped out.

Independents and others got 15.5% of the vote – a high figure thought to be spread quite thinly given the number of candidates. Where those votes transfer could be crucial to the final outcome of counts across 43 constituencies.

The independents combined have pushed Fianna Fáil into fourth place – the party's worst performance since Éamon De Valera founded the party in the 1920s. In Dublin, Fianna Fáil support barely hit 8%.

The exit poll put support for Fine Gael lower than some opinion polls had suggested, where they had been tipped to secure as much as 40% of the popular vote, potentially allowing for a single-party government propped up by independents. The last RTÉ exit poll in 2007 proved to be 99% accurate when compared to the actual number of votes cast.

The "F" word is not necessarily something I want to hear coming out of my grand kids mouths.

I believe we are what we say, and that out of a bitter well springs forth bitter water. Most these days are brimming over with bitter water - sweet water is very hard to find.

My two sons were raised knowing not to swear or use it in front of their mother.

It boils down to respecting another human being. The American Indians would just take your scalp to insult you - no swearing necessary.

That being said ..

WE ARE SOOOO SCREWED

Ireland's most dominant political party, Fianna Fáil, is on the road to a historic and devastating defeat in the republic's general election.

They'll be back.. Irish voters have extremely short-term memory, just like American voters it would seem. This amnesia even infects the minds of Irish Truthers - I am pissed off with the amount of Truthers who went out and voted for Sinn Fein. Let's ignore for a moment that they were way more corrupt than Fianna Fail long before ever seeing public office, let's also ignore for a moment that socialism (Truthers voted for other leftist parties too) is not the remedy for corporate fascism, let's just point to the fact that not so long ago that SF's military wing were blowing up innocent women and children and those same people are at the helm of SF today, having never to account for their war crimes spanning two island. Oh, and that the IRA are an MI6 black-op, and their SF front are just false/controlled opposition that have been used as convenient boogeymen by the southern Irish government.

Either the memories of Irish so-called Truthers are very short, or their moral compass is out of sync and is inconsistent. Partly still Sheeple I think.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has a clean sheet, he is not corrupt. I live in his constituency, I would have heard rumours if he was otherwise, because I have heard plenty of rumours about local MEP Jim Higgins of FG. Kenny is just of a teaching background (which in Ireland means he is a silverspooner - we have had a bizarre cultural quirk that elevates teachers to the status of nobles, and that still remains in certain quarters today), but it means he is not quite an insider, but make no mistake, he will be an obedient puppet.

However, while I believe Fine Gael are the annointed party of the 31st Dáil, I believe Enda Kenny is not the annointed Taoiseach. Recall I mentioned to you the Bruton dynasty of Fine Gael and their shady connections? I believe Richard Bruton is the REAL annointed Taoiseach of this country. Last year, Richard Bruton mounted a leadership challenge against Enda Kenny just as Kenny tabled a no-confidence vote against the FF/Green government. I suspect that it will be only a matter of time before Bruton tries again, 6 months - 1 year perhaps, he'll probably use the fact that Kenny will not reinvigorate the economy to seize his opportunity.

Well exactly, and frankly, notice how the most evil and Satanic elements in the world that continually work to oppress the entirety of God's creation, namely man, continually wear suits as their primary garb of choice.

It is not at all a reach to suggest that the official dress of the Synagogue of Satan is a business suit.

I saw a BBC News interview of Evelyn de Rothschild - a mild mannered gentleman in a suit. lol I also noted he was acting as though he is just a mere observer in the economic crisis..

Ireland's most dominant political party, Fianna Fáil...

Hmmmm, fail, what a great name for the political parties. The republican fail, the democratic fail, the independant fail.

It'd be a great name for the government in general too. The federal fail, the Wisconsin fail, the environmental protection fail, the internal revenue fail, president fail, congressman fail, the police fail, the state fail, the supreme fail.

And jew.orgs. The anti-defamation fail, the southern poverty law fail, the american-israeli political action fail.

We could just about replace every word that has to do with government/jews with the word fail. It'd be damned appropriate, accurate, and keep things simple.

Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. Prosperity is just around the corner.
Mike Flaherty: Yeah, it's been there a long time. I wish I knew which corner.

Yes, lol. Although not prounounced like "fail" but more like "fall", FF still has picked up the nickname in recent times as Fianna Epic Fail. lol

Well, not quite.
It was Onans responsibility to impregnate his dead brothers wife so that his brothers line might continue.
Onan instead used the withdrawal method of birth control. God punished Onan for his wickedness and greed by putting him to death, not for spilling his seed per se, but for deliberately not impregnating the woman he was supposed to.

If "spilling seed" is a sin, I am soooo screwed (and not in a good way).
