Thousands of Gmail users have been left with empty inboxes after their accounts were accidentally wiped clean.

As well as missing e-mails, many reported that their contacts had also disappeared.

Google, which operates Gmail, said that a small percentage of its users had been affected.

Some accounts have already been restored, suggesting the data was not permanently deleted.

In a statement, Google said: "This is affecting less than .08% of our Gmail user base, and we've already fixed the problem for some individuals."

The company said that engineers were working to restore service.

Google does not release official figures for the number of Gmail accounts, however it is believed to be between 150 million and 200 million.

That would mean that around 150,000 users were affected by the problem.

Gmail outages on this scale are rare, according to Alex Chitu, whose blog Google Operating System, charts the company's cloud computing initiatives.

He told BBC News that although service was being restored, many users were angry about the way the outage had been handled.

"Today's issue shows that Gmail is far from perfect and Google should do a better job at communicating with users.

"When you can't access your message and your Google account is disabled, it's nice to know why," he said.

Had a Gmail account before "identity thief" in London changed password and Google suspended it. Google could do a better job of policing these thefts by simply turning over information to police, in my case, in London. Gmail attracted a lot of spammers; haven't had any spam with Hotmail.

G-mail is great if one likes google reading every email sent and received with incriminating emails forwarded to the "proper" authorities.

Further details of my hacker theft:

As best as I can determine a hacker in London got into my computer, changed my email password and possibly the security answer to a question (first teacher) which Google asked in establishing my gmail account, then the hacker sent the following to addressees in my "sent mail" box:

dateThu, Dec 9,2010 at 2:46 subjectHello mailed-bygmail.com signed-bygmail.com hide details 2:46 AM (17 hours ago)

Could you please do me a favor?

You see, I made a trip this past weekend to London, and had my bag, phone, wallet, and other values stolen. This may sound odd, but it happened very fast. The situation now is that I need to pay off my bills, but I've no cash or credit card that I can use. I've made contact with my bank but they need more time to come up with a new card. The embassy is willing to help by letting me fly without my passport, but I've have to pay for my hotel bill, a return ticket, and other things that I need. I was thinking of asking you to lend me some quick funds that I can give back as soon as I get in. I really need to be on the next available flight. The total amount I need to get things done is $2500.

I can forward you details on how you can get the funds to me. You can reach me via e-mail or Lancaster Gate hotel desk phone: +447024078910

My apologies for having to ask for this favor and for any inconvenience it may bring.

Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

Regards,

Paul

------------------------------------------------------------- Anyone notice if local police invite complaints of such "thefts" and if they can really do much about it? Or would making a complaint be a waste of time just like reporting a house break in about which police can do little but write up a report for insurance claim purposes?
