Passive smoking Duration of exposure is an important factor

Exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke as a child or adult appears to increase a woman's risk of breast cancer, experts say.

Their study of nearly 80,000 women found breast cancer risk was a third higher among those who had clocked up decades of passive smoking.

The researchers say their "suggestive" findings in the British Medical Journal need confirming with more studies.

Meanwhile, health experts emphasised the importance of smoking cessation.

The study suggests the earlier you start smoking and the longer you continue to do so, the higher your chance of developing breast cancer”

End Quote Dr Rachel Greig of Breakthrough Breast Cancer

While some studies have found a link, others have not. And none appear to agree on how much exposure is too much or at what age it could be most damaging.

The latest study by US researchers, led by Dr Juhua Luo from West Virginia University, does not provide a definitive answer but does suggest that extensive exposure to second-hand smoke poses a risk.

Among the 79,990 women aged between 50 and 79 studied, the researchers identified 3,250 cases of invasive breast cancer during 10 years of follow-up.

When the women were asked about their history of smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke a pattern emerged.

Smokers had a 16% increased risk of developing breast cancer after the menopause. Continue reading the main story Passive smoking

* Passive smoking is thought to cause 600,000 deaths every year globally * One-third of those killed are children, often exposed to smoke at home, according to the World Health Organization * New research by the British Lung Foundation has found that over half (51%) of eight to 15 year olds have been exposed to cigarette smoke when confined in a car

For ex-smokers the risk was 9% and continued for up to 20 years after an individual had stopped smoking.

The highest breast cancer risk was found among women who had smoked for over 50 years or more.

But women who had never smoked but had lived or worked with smokers for prolonged times also appeared to be at increased risk for breast cancer.

For example, over 10 years' exposure in childhood, over 20 years' exposure as an adult at home and over 10 years' exposure as an adult at work, increased the risk by 32%.

The same was not seen among women who had been exposed to lesser amounts.

Dr Rachel Greig of Breakthrough Breast Cancer said: "The study suggests the earlier you start smoking and the longer you continue to do so, the higher your chance of developing breast cancer.

"We know that smoking has many other health risks and is a major cause of lung cancer and heart disease, and we encourage all women not to smoke."

Amanda Sandford of Action on Smoking and Health said a zero tolerance was needed. "If we want to have a real impact on cancer deaths then we have to prevent children from starting to smoke and give smokers all the support they need to quit."

More pseudo-science masking a hidden agenda.

Breast cancer rates have been increasing over the last 50 years and the percentage of the population that smokes has gone down.

Smoking among adults was at it's highest rates in the 30's through the 80's and there seems to be no evidence that the cancer rates increased markedly until sometime in the 70's to 80's and has been continuing to accelerate as the rate of smoking has gone down.

Another thing I don't see being controlled for in any of these studies are the chemicals that are added to mass produced tobacco products particularly cigarettes (and much of it in the cigarette paper).

The anti-smoking agenda is all well and fine and I will not boost smoking as a healthful activity however the anti-smoking zealots, like the Glowbull Warming zealots, fixate on one or two subsets of data to the exclusion of everything else in order to foist their will and preference upon others. In short they are largely a bunch of neurotic busybodies who twist and distort the science to support their agenda and placate their own personal neuroses.

As well I'm sure it still irks the shit out of them that the rate of Alzheimer's Disease is lower among smokers, and that smokers remain mentally alert later in life than non-smokers.

As well medical science which purports to attribute all manner of disease to smoking still cannot point to specific known science which says "this is the exact and invariable mechanism which causes cancer" and yet despite not being able to explain the exact biomedical cause and mechanism they have managed to buffalo a lot of people into accepting their "grave pronouncements".

Remember The White Rose
"“Believe nothing merely because you have been told it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings - that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” ~ Gautama Siddhartha — The Buddha

The age-adjusted all-cause death rate was 9.02 per 1000 person-years in smokers, 3.79 in ex-smokers and 3.45 in nonsmokers according to a '79 study of 4000 individuals, age 35 - 54 (published in NEJM).. Could be some died in fires caused by careless smoking.

According to WikiAnswers:
