U.S. Supplies of potassium iodide gone…. Government takes control

potassium iodideU.S. Supplies of potassium iodide pills are taking a huge hit as people flock to the stores in search of protection from possible nuclear fallout.

A number of stores across the west coast are reporting that they are completely sold out. And a pharmacist at a Walgreen’s in California told us that they would not be getting anymore because the government has seized all supplies.

Fleming Pharmaceuticals, maker of ThyroShield a potassium iodide used in nuclear emergencies, said in a press release today that before the Japanese Quake the federal government already has stockpiled millions of doses. The company claims that some of the federal stockpile has expired and the remaining supply is set to expire over the year.

White House chief spokesman Jay Carney continued to tell the press that the U.S. is not in danger, but wouldn’t comment on the governments stockpiling program.

Potassium iodide, which is sometimes are sold as anti-radiation pills can protect your thyroid from radiation by blocking the absorption of radioiodine. Potassium iodide does not protect from all side effects of radiation poisoning and can have a number of side effects. It should only be taken in prescription doses if the radiation reaches the coast at dangerous levels.

UPDATE: 3-15-2011 11:24p.m pst U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a statement about potassium iodide policy. Dori Salcido, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health, said that they will be looking into “every aspect” of the Japanese disaster including “”Policy options relating to KI distribution.”

One very workable alternative is to buy Kelp tablets or dried Norwegian Kelp, known as "Dulce", for naturally occurring and available iodine. By eating it you build you body's level of iodine up to the point that there is no room for the radioactive Iodine 131. Although it should also be known that the half life of Iodine 131 is only 8 days.

But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings - that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” ~ Gautama Siddhartha — The Buddha

Don't know for sure. They are a food supplement and are good for you. So, as a precaution to insure your body is not short of it, thus taking up I 131, I would consider it an ongoing supplement for the indefinite future.

Toad licking
From Uncyclopedia, the content-free encyclopedia.

Dude, seriously - you expect me to lick that...?

Toad Licking is a substitute for kitten huffing and chicken huffing, developed in 1974 by Ancient Incan wise-women.

Kittens and chickens were hard to come by at that time in Peru, so a sustitute was sought. The frog was chosen because they were cheap and easy to come by, but later toads were discovered to be more suitable for the purpose. At first, they tried to huff the toad. However, this led to side effects, including addiction, tendency to swear (Geriatric Profanity Disorder, or GPD), impulse to edit Uncyclopedia, and, in some cases, toad-related human fatalities. While attempting to huff a toad, an ancient Peruvian accidentally licked its back, and visions of evil were unleashed. Contents [hide]

A lot of elements, Iodine being one of them, are most often found bonded to something else. It then becomes a matter of choosing the one that makes the element you want most readily available.

Iodine comes in a variety of forms it is just a matter of uptake. The reason for a fast uptake Iodine like Potassium Iodide is that most people are deficient in it and so in an event where you want your Thyroid topped off quickly Potassium Iodide is quick. You can also gargle with iodized salt or take some form of Kelp. If one has time the natural route via a supplement would be my choice. It is also cheaper.

It could take 8 days for it to cross the pacific even if there were massive amounts of radiation in the atmosphere.

If it gets into the Jet Stream it'll take about 36 hours.

Remember though 8 days is the half life that does not mean it has been neutralized but that half of it has decayed into other isotopes. So every 8 days it's volume reduces by about half. Depending upon how much is in the environment and how long the release continues it could still remain a consideration for months.

The following products, which may be available at some internet suppliers, are good sources of iodine for the thyroid (so the thyroid will not take up radioactive iodine): Iodoral (12.5 mg) and Lugol's Solution (6.5 mg).

The company Ready Made Resources now has supplies of potassium iodide and radiation cards. Go to www.ki4u.com and follow the instructions. Shane Conner of ki4u.com is acting as a wholesaler to other retailers, of which Ready Made Resources is one. He cites other suppliers and will begin to take orders again soon at his website, as soon as he gets caught up with shipping.

The consumption of salt to get iodine is a good way to get sick or drive up your blood pressure. There is almost no iodine in it but it is reported to also contain aluminum salts (and other toxic junk). Kelp pills only have microgram levels of iodine.

Don't take ANY iodine until we have measurable levels of fallout entering the U.S. on the jet stream.

On the other hand, everyone in the American Midwest, near or south of the Great Lakes is highly deficient in iodine, since it is not in our soils (and not in our foods). And it is helpful for many to take iodine tablets (12.5 to 25 mg) on a longterm basis.
