Freedom's Enemies: A collaborator of the Rosenbergs admits his previously unknown Soviet espionage more than 60 years after the fact. It's just the latest revelation that the anti-communists of that era were right. The "innocent victims" of the Red Scare were once legion — like suave U.S. envoy Alger Hiss, who doubled as a Soviet spy chief, and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who gave Moscow A-bomb plans. The latest debunking of this myth is Rosenberg fellow spy Morton Sobell, who finally admitted it in 2008. But in a December interview with Ronald Radosh and Steven Usdin, Sobell, 93, added that he gave hundreds of secret Air Force documents to the Soviets in 1948. Sobell also fingered William Perl, who had been attending the City College of New York with Sobell and Julius Rosenberg, and worked at a Virginia Army air base during World War II. Perl had denied wrongdoing, but was convicted of perjury in 1953. "I did it for the Soviet Union," said Sobell, a Red-diaper baby whose parents were both Communist Party members who hosted meetings in their home. In case you didn't know, the secret communists of 20th century history and their pawns have just been rolling out from under the bed in recent years. British historian Christopher Andrew in 2005 revealed that Salvador Allende, elected president of Chile in 1970 on a 36% plurality and the first Marxist ever to win power through the ballot box, was for all intents a KGB agent. "What Allende's KGB file describes as 'systematic contact' with him began after the establishment in 1961 of a Soviet trade mission in Chile, which provided cover for a KGB presence," Andrew notes in his book, "The World Was Going Our Way." Speaking of Chile, recently declassified FBI files reveal that a 29-year-old then-junior prosecutor in Massachusetts named Edward Kennedy on a 1961 tour of Latin America "made arrangements to 'rent' a brothel" in Santiago "for the night," and "met with a number of individuals known to have communist sympathies." Author Paul Kengor several years ago revealed that a May 14, 1983, highly classified letter from the head of the KGB to Soviet premier and former KGB chief Yuri Andropov found the so-called Lion of the Senate trying to collude with the Kremlin on undermining President Reagan's defense policies. Even the so-loathed Sen. Joseph McCarthy has been rehabilitated, by M. Stanton Evans in "Blacklisted by History." Evans illustrates, for example, that U.S. Army counsel Joseph Welch's famed "Have you no decency?" line during McCarthy's televised hearings was actually a melodramatic deceit; Welch himself had weeks earlier fired the "young lad" he accused McCarthy of slandering, admitting that he was indeed a member of the National Lawyers Guild Communist front group. The evidence just keeps coming that most of what those irresponsible "Red baiters" were saying in the 1950s was right.

Rosenberg Grand Jury Files Released Ruth Greenglass Testimony Directly Contradicts Central Trial Charge against Ethel Rosenberg Grand Jury Records Describe Greenglass Handwriting, not Ethel Typing, But Prosecutors Said Ethel “struck the keys, blow by blow, against her own country” Washington, D.C., September 11, 2008 – – The Julius and Ethel Rosenberg grand jury transcripts released today as the result of legal action by the National Security Archive and a coalition of historians directly contradict the central charge against Ethel Rosenberg in the atomic espionage prosecution that J. Edgar Hoover called “the case of the century,” according to experts who analyzed the documents today. The documents include the grand jury testimony of Ethel Rosenberg’s sister-in-law, Ruth Greenglass, in which she describes writing in her own longhand the information her husband obtained at the Los Alamos nuclear installation, for passing on to Julius Rosenberg and the Soviet Union. Records of the Federal Bureau of Investigation show that ten days before the trial against the Rosenbergs commenced, Ruth and David Greenglass for the first time mentioned that Ethel Rosenberg had typed those notes. At trial, Ruth and David Greenglass testified that Ethel Rosenberg had typed up the information from the Los Alamos nuclear installation. Ruth Greenglass was never herself prosecuted for her role. The lead prosecutor used the Greenglass testimony as the culmination of his closing speech to the jury, saying that Ethel Rosenberg sat at that typewriter and “struck the keys, blow by blow, against her own country in the interests of the Soviets.” Ronald Radosh, co-author of The Rosenberg File and one of the experts who filed affidavits in the case, commented, “The grand jury documents cast significant doubt on the key prosecution charge used to convict Ethel Rosenberg at the trial and sentence her to death.” Radosh found confirmation for the grand jury version, in contradiction to the trial version, in the VENONA intercepts of Soviet intelligence communications, which describe key information on Los Alamos coming from David Greenglass through Julius Rosenberg in hand-written form in January 1945. Today’s release includes 940 pages of the Rosenberg grand jury testimony, and 41 of the 45 witnesses who appeared before the grand jury between August 1950 and March 1951. David Vladeck, lead attorney for the plaintiffs, remarked that today’s release was only the fourth time in history that historical grand jury testimony has been released to the public. Vladeck called the release the “first act in a two-act play,” referring to the still-withheld grand jury testimony from the Brothman-Moskowitz trial, which served as a “tuneup” for the Rosenberg trial. “It is quite clear that if the trial were held today the government would have had a very difficult time establishing that Ethel Rosenberg was an active participant in this conspiracy and indeed it looks like the key testimony against her was perjured,” commented Vladeck. “It is clear that at some point the government strategy took a dramatic turn. Grand jury testimony reveals that there was a great deal of espionage on conventional munitions but none of that came out at trial. Why not? It may be that the government did not want to reveal the extent to which Rosenberg and other Soviet spy rings had managed to penetrate the U.S. defense establishment. “ Steven Usdin, author of Engineering Communism: How Two Americans Spied for Stalin and Founded the Soviet Silicon Valley (Yale Univ. Press), commented that there is no question about the guilt of Julius Rosenberg and those associated with him in spying for the Soviet Union, “but the new records suggest that the government committed its own misconduct in the way it prosecuted the Rosenbergs.” In Usdin’s view, the grand jury testimony was also important for what was not there, that is, evidence on the industrial espionage carried out by the group around Julius Rosenberg, which the government apparently did not pursue. Bruce Craig, professor of History at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada and author of Treasonable Doubt: The Harry Dexter White Spy Case (University of Kansas), remarked that the new evidence raised significant questions about whether the trial was fair, whether the prosecution strategy was improper, and whether the prosecutors manipulated the grand jury.

F, it is fine with meif you want to present a nuanced informed argument, I welcome that, as I want to be informed if my positions need to be changes as the facts on the ground require. But the juvinile obscenities you present are not acceptable. I thought I had already mentioned this to you. If this is not understandable to you, please do not respond to me in the future. A)fter World War II, the Democratic Party suffered from the same sort of pusillanimous psychosis that seized all of France after World War I. The entire party began to lose its nerve for sacrifice, heroism, and bravery. Beginning in the fifties, there was a real fight for the soul of the Democratic Party. By the late sixties, the contest was over. The anti-Communist Democrats had lost.
