The interesting thing about the flourishing scene of the mid 60's to early 70's was that most of the Rock Musicians were trained first in Classical Music. In other words they understood notation and timing as well as melody and harmony. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer were all students of the London Conservatory, as was the Organist for Uriah Heep. Most all had at least some classical training. So, by understanding higher level music they were able to create higher level Rock.

You are correct sir. The main reason why I follow the European scene, particularly the Dutch scene---even the rappers are classically trained. This video was done by Perquisite, a cello player and a rapper/singer from Aruba Pete Philley---everything they do is better than us....

As well some groups, Camel comes to mind, have done rock variations on classical compositions. Some of which are quite interesting. Their rock version of "The Snow Goose" was, I thought, quite good. I was going to post the video but evidently it is not available in the U.S. due to copyright restrictions.
