gardening is too expensive and too time consuming for most people. By the time one pays for all that city water, one could buy a lot more food at the store. And that's very marginal considering that one gives all their time to raising the plants. Giving time is the operative word, too. Without a lot of time to kill, gardening at home is a joke. Hours spent in a garden bring far less than minimum wage. Pennies on the hour is more like it. Having a garden is more about killing weeds than raising food to eat. Having a house full of kids to do the weeding is important, otherwise, a home garden is a waste of time. If one buys all those supplies mentioned, home gardening is also a waste of money. One thing that is not a waste though is finding out first hand the ridiculous notion of raising bug-free plants without the judicious use of chemical tools. There is nothing sustainable about bugs eating all the corn. Brussels sprouts raised without chemical tools is so buggy as to be disgusting. What kind of dangerous chemicals are in the nasty bugs that inhabit organic Brussels sprouts? If you are serious about saving water, buy your groceries at the store. The vegetables are grown in the most efficient manner possible when mass produced.

At first, I was inclined to agree with James but honestly, gardening can be fun and rewarding. It doesn't take long to weed the garden. No longer than driving to the grocery store, grocery shopping and driving back home does. Bugs are no great deal either.

Turn the tv off. There's nothing on there but lies anyway. In the time most people take to watch the news they could garden once a day.

If you need instructions on how to weed....

just go to the grocery store.

I garden.

When it rains I don't water ... when it's dry I water... When I go outside to smoke I weed by hand because I dislike monsanto chemicals.

If I wanted I could do the intensive bucket method...

But I feel fine with what I do and what I have.

If you need instructions on how to weed

The best method we have found (by far) is weed barrier.Once rolled out and properly staked,(get the good stuff, extra thick, black on one side & white on the other)this stuff works.Around the plant base a few stubborn weed grasses will appear, just yank their buts out.Gardening is cool,it is very rewarding to go out and pick your sides for the nights meal. Our garden is 25' x 100' and expanding. Our brussel sprouts stay relatively bug free, but our cabbage has to be stripped down a few layers.Okra is great, squash, brocolli, corn(last years corn was yummy)potatoes, tomatoes, every berry, peaches, apples, cherries, etc. Might I suggest always use your own seeds, use feeding stakes on all fruit trees, shoot any red wing blackbirds. We see the amish around here using the weed barrier, and they know their stuff. We are facing a crisis, better learn to grow your own food, and if you do not have a well, try using rain barrels.
