Home : News : 12-year-old genius takes aim as disproving Einstein's Theory of Relativity

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. - What were you doing when you were 12 years old?

Playing video games? Dreaming of winning a Heisman Trophy? Maybe starting to show a little interest in a significant other?

It’s probably safe to say you weren’t taking on Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

Well, that’s what 12-year-old Jake Barnet, of Hamilton County, Indiana, is proposing. Jake has become somewhat of an Internet star thanks to YouTube videos of his ideas about mathematics and physics, which his mom shoots and posts online.

In one of the most recent videos, Jake discusses Einstein’s Theory of relativity, explaining in the description why he might have a different theory:

“My initial perception from this is that light does have mass,” Jake writes. “Obviously, energy coming out of a system where light is emitted could not be conserved otherwise. You can correct me later if I change my mind, but for the moment this is my perception.”

Jake has a mild form of autism, according to http://Time.com, and he also has an I.Q. of 170. He taught himself calculus, algebra and geometry in two weeks and graduated high school at the age of eight. He has been attending college-level physics classes since then.

The channel with all of his videos has thousands of hits.

You don't trust the government about anything, but you trust that we have been visited by aliens because of unprovable rumors?

You obviously don't trust anything that you can't understand.

The Pentagon announced TODAY the formation of a new 500-man elite fighting unit called the United States Redneck Special Forces (USRSF) These boys will be dropped off in Afghanistan and have been given only the following facts about terrorists: 1. The season opened today. 2. There is no limit. 3. They taste just like chicken. 4. They don't like beer, pickups, country music or Jesus .... 5. They are directly responsible for the death of Dale Earnhardt. The Pentagon expects the problem in Afghanistan to be over by Friday.

The flash was not an explosion. Also, if you REALLY look at it, the lights were alternating flashes as they descended, and it appears that there were THREE spheres, with one stopping when it came down into a cloud, whereas the other two continued their descent.

You need to have an open mind to this sort of thing if you're going to get a clear idea of what you're looking at. If you already have decided something is impossible before you truly look at it, then no matter what you see, it will be a hoax in your eyes.

It looks like the Hindenburg.

The Hindendburg was Cigar Shaped not half of an oblate spheroid.

What does an extraterrestrial craft look like?

Ok let me qualify that. It looks terrestrial therefore I have a hard time leaping to the extraterrestrial explanation.

In what way does it look terrestrial? Its shape is not even a close resemblance to a Zeppelin. I'm an airship afficianado I know what they look like and that IS NOT an airship.

As well the flash of light is NOT characteristic - and a green tinge is not common in natural phenomena as it is a very narrow spectral band. For example Green Stars are so rare, in part because of the way our eyes work, as to be notable in the unusual circumstance where one is identified. I don't pretend to know what the flash is, or the falling stuff, but I can say it does not look like a natural phenomena.

UFO's are not a matter of belief they are simply a matter of being willing to look at what is there rather than trying to explain it away.

I contacted one of my science friends for his opinion. (so much for not having an open mind) I wasn't sure but he does speak Portuguese fluently. Anyway, here is part of what he had to say and a related video.

I have lived in Brazil and speak Portuguese fluently. The anchors are speaking about this video that is in YouTube and is attracting the attention of people in Sao Paulo. My impression is that it is an UFO, and that it is not Brazilian made. I don't know if is made by the USA or other country, but in that case, what is the device doing in Sao Paulo state? They don't need secret airships to scrutinize Brazil. They have satellites for doing that without being exposed to public video cameras.

In this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9_Z8QIkUAg&feature=related you can see a better image, with higher contrast and image stabilization, and if you pause the video when the lights appears inside the cloud you'll notice three clear light sources. How the UFO disappeared or what are those two lights falling, I don't know. I am not an alien so I cannot imagine what process was going there.

That in no way proves the absurd theory of relativity.

Actually the theory has been completely tested, and it agrees with observation to a high level of accuracy.
Time dilation and universal speed limit have been tested with particle accelerators.

Time dilation and universal speed limit have been tested with particle accelerators.

Thing is about the "universal speed limit" is that those particles were accelerated by magnets operating at our rest speed. So in relation to the velocity of the force exerted by a stationary source, they could only go so fast.

However, it is my theory that if the particles could propel themselves on their own, they could surpass that "speed limit".

How do we even know how fast the solar system is traveling through space, or how fast the galaxy is moving through the Universe? What if we are traveling faster than light and don't even know it?

To expand on that idea, wouldn't light travel slower in relation to earth when traveling in our direction of travel than in the other direction, if we are in fact moving through space-time at some incredible speed, which we are?

Of course it doesn't. That said, it all depends on the reference point from which you wish to measure the velocity. If you are traveling at X speed, you should still be able to accelerate to c * X, and still accelerate past that to whatever speed you wished, since the reference point will always be your ship.

No it has not been completely tested. It is quite impossible to do so since the theory itself violates many firmly established laws of physics that no one argues with, including Einstein. He himself realized there was a big problem with the theory, but hey, when you are being celebrated as he was for coming up with it, he was very reluctant to make a big deal about it not being right, even though it does seem to explain observations in a single frame.

Sorry but that is false.
The theory has been completely tested and agrees with observation to high precision. It does not violate firmly established laws of physics, the theory IS the firmly established law of physics.
The theory can not, and was not intended, to describe quantum level physics. For that there are several competing theorys. They do not compete against Relativity.

When the theory was first published, many scientists disagreed because it disagreed with many popular ideas at the time. Those ideas were found to be false and Relativity was found to be true.

Not quite.
Scientists used atomic clocks on aircraft to observe relativistic time dilation. The results matched relativity to high accuracy.
Louis Essen thought the experiment was inaccurate. He was wrong.
Other experements have been done that have verified time dilation.

RELATIVITY - Joke or Swindle?

Did you read the link I posted for you which indicates GPS satellites HAVE to account for time dilation otherwise they would not function?

Yes I did. However having satellite clocks running at the same speed as ground base clocks is not required for GPS to function correctly. That is a myth of how GPS works. The receiver only needs to know where the satellites are located and when it received each signal to determine its location. Each satellite's location is broadcast to the receiver. The time measured on a receiver is the time difference between each signal it receives using its own local clock. No local clock synchronization with the satellite clock is needed. Using the location data, broadcast by each satellite, and the time difference between received signals from each satellite, calculations can be made to determine location. Any slowing of the satellite clock is not necessary to be able to pinpoint a location to within 1cm. I personally don't know of any GPS receiver that is even close to being that accurate anyway.

My problems with it are numerous. First of all I do not believe the speed of light is a constant. Also reciprocal time dilation is really utter nonsense that should have been rejected by any scientist worth anything.

I may be wrong, but I am not going to accept a theory no matter how many people agree with it if it makes no sense to me. That would be accepting it on blind faith, and to me that is not science at all.

What does one of the world’s foremost experts on GPS have to say about relativity theory and the Global Positioning System?

If the guy is trying to refute the workings of the GPS system with bible quotes, he's not a scientist, he's a whackjob.

First of all I do not believe the speed of light is a constant.

What led you to that belief?

Also reciprocal time dilation is really utter nonsense that should have been rejected by any scientist worth anything.

Why?

You believe in reciprocal time dilation? Seriously?

RELATIVITY - Joke or Swindle?

Who knows Ricky, you might be right. There are people who think relativity is a proven theory, and others who don't see it as such. For an opposing viewpoint, you can read the info at the link below;

What is the experimental basis of Special Relativity?

I've heard of time dilation but not "reciprocal time dilation". Could you give me a definition?
