Isn't there some legal precident for filing a lawsuit for doing that? Remember someone hacked Palin's email...and I think the guy went to jail, or something bad happened to him. Anyone Know? I imagine--and this is assuming that there were actually any "hacking" going on, the hacker would use a proxy and she wouldn't have gotten the actual IP.

It looks like 6 posts were made, and 5 had the first number, only one had the second. Goldi-Lox posted on 2011-04-04 18:11:55 ET IMO valid IP numbers are 0-256. 291 in the second IP seems out of range? The only thing we know for sure is, yukon's as queer as a three dollar bill.

Internet IP address octets are organized as four groups of 256 unique numbers, each. 291 doesn't exist in octal math cleanly within the IP octet structure or for that matter any standard binary radix. Then again, Clyven may have taught Sally some new tricks: like say, c-h-e-e-s-e.

Could be, no idea. I just did a google search on the number she posted and then posted the results I got. As I said, anyone who wants to hack someone else's computer, or into some business or government computer, will use a proxy and it is highly unlikely they will be found easily.

will use a proxy and it is highly unlikely they will be found easily. I goofed up on that should be.... 0-255 which makes 256 numbers including 0. Buckeroo is right, 291 is not a valid IP. DHS, echelon and other US gov spyware probably has the info, but we ain't going to see it. It's all top secret, and they'll claim they're not spying on the "good guys", just terrrrrists.

Many IP addresses are proxies and since Goldi-Loks doesn't limit a poster to a static IP in combination with a login user/ID/PASSWORD linked to the same poster on a constant basis there is no way she can understand what has happened unless she has a pile of money to research the issue with the server administrators on those same proxies. Of course the proxy administrator will oblige the request for a service fee. And it will take a month or two before she has the report after paying the bucks. But a truly cunning user knows how to deal EVEN with that fact: they use several proxies in a serial fashion such that: ORIGINALUSER_IP addy -> proxie1 -> proxie2 ->proxie3 (and so forth) -> DESTINATIONTARGET_IPaddy addy.
