Icelandic Kelp Description from NATURE'S LIFE

http://www.allstarhealth.com/f/natures_life-icelandic_kelp.htm

Highest natural source of iodine is Icelandic Kelp, laminaria digitata. One tiny tablet of this kelp (41 mg) contains 225 mcg (150% of RDA). I bought a 500 tab bottle by Nature's Life for less than 10 bucks (including sales tax) at local health food store.

This article is should not be construed as medical advice. You should seek the advice of a medical professional to make our own informed decisions.

Potassium Iodine is used to load up your thyroid in case radioactive iodine isotopes are in your region.  You should consult your physician or healthcare professional before taking it. It does have side effects, some rather strong ones. Most Americans are critically short of the reccommended daily dose of iodine. That's why iodine is added to salt, however almost all Americans have cut back on salt use. Even considering that, Americans on average get 4% of the recommended amount.

If one is low on iodine, and it is in fallout, then the isotopes will go immediately to your thyroid. Radioactive Iodine-131 has been detected in the US, but so far the only data we have is from 3/25 and doesn't include the higher amounts of fallout hitting us now.

During Chernobyl, potassium iodine was given to prevent thyroid cancers from occuring, especially in young children. Potassium iodine is issued to US military when exposed to radioactivity.

Potassium iodine can have adverse effects on your electrolytes.Potassium can interefere with the physiology of the sodium potassium pump for one, and certainly can dramatically affect the heart and kidneys.  You should also check with your pharmacist to see if there are drug interactions with your existing medications before taking it.

Kelp and other seaweeds were given in Poland during Chernobyl, and are rich in iodine. It's believed that is greatly facilitated protecting the citizens who took it. Some seaweeds like Nori are available in most Asian food stores and are rich in iodine and taste good. Seaweed salad is delicious, and usually is flash frozen and brought to the US and found in the frozen food aisle. Because the Japanese eat a lot of seaweed, they have an abundance of iodine, and it's believed that they will have less thyroid cancers from fallout. I recommend dried versions, that were manufactured before the crisis since radioactivity has been found in Japanese waters, due to the nuclear incidents and dumping of radioactive water. Seaweed will not hurt you regardless of your medical conditions or medicines. No matter what, iodine in whatever form will not protect you from Xenon-133 or Cesium-137 or any other radioactive isotopes. It only protects the thyroid from taking up radioactive Iodines like 131.

Whatever you purchase it, you need to ensure that what you are purchasing is in the correct dosage.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_iodide See the World Health Organization's listing for proper dosages. It all depends upon the iodine content of the solution you are preparing or tablets you are taking versus the age of the patient.

There have been several instances of unscrupulous companies not delivering orders or sending iodine in insufficent strength. Use your own best judgement.

I would eat seaweed instead.

Drug Interactions with Potassium Iodine and Potassium

Note than many people are on common drugs that will have adverse side effects from taking potassium iodine.

Just about every beta blocker or ace inhibitor for starters. A lot of older folks are taking diuretics like hydrochlorothizide or loop diuretics. A lot of people take Heparin for blood clots. People taking Plavix. Diabetics on insulin. People taking anti-anxiety medications like Xanax. Asthmatics taking theophylline.

You must use caution, common sense, and talk to your physicians/nurse practitioners/physician's assistants and/or pharmacists to make these vital medical decisions.

Continue monitoring the radiation levels from a variety of sources and take precautions while stockpiling a few basic supplies.

I would think it prudent to make sure that you and your family members are not iodine deficient. I like the natural Kelp products particularly the Norweigian variety. It's good for you on more than one level as it contains, in addition to natural iodine, micronutrients that are deficient in most diets.

While I have to add a disclaimer that I am not a doctor and this is not to be construed as medical advice (the AMA and Big Pharma do not like people horning in on their monopoly) other things I would consider if I were doing this for myself:

The Russians successfully used French Green Clay to help detoxify people after Chernobyl and from the one report I read groups given the clay as a supplement had a statistically significant reduction in radiation associated cancers. The French Green Clay is a powerful detoxifier and will sweep heavy metals and minerals from your body after binding with them. Since it does not discriminate between good and bad I would, if I were using it, take a good multi-mineral supplement daily while using the clay, 1 teaspoon to a cup of water or juice and then stirred in twice a day on an empty stomach (or 3 times if exposure is heavy). The multi-mineral is to ensure you don't suffer mineral deficiencies while using the clay. Which from what I have heard should be used after exposure not before. abraxas said she found it available from Swanson's vitamins.

Niacin has been shown to be effective, in some studies, at eliminating radiation from the body. If I were doing it I would probably start at 100 mg. daily. You will notice that initially you will become flushed and might experience a tingling sensation - that is the radiation (which includes solar radiation) releasing from your body. Just continue it until you no longer get a reaction. That last is important from what I have read as stopping midway before you have completed flushing it out can result in stuff turning on adversely.

If you can gain access to a sauna use it. Sauna's are great for cleansing your system. Make sure you have salt tablets and homeopathic "Cell Salts" to replenish your system. Drink lots of CLEAN water to keep from getting heat stroke or dehydration. Two or three times a week at moderate temperatures (160 to 180) for longer periods, taking short breaks as needed, rather than short periods at high temperatures is better. You want to be able stay in the sauna longer to induce profuse sweating so as to cleanse your system. Again, from what I have read, it is useful to take a tablespoon of a good clean all blend oil, like Udo's Perfected Oil, before the sauna. That allows for the exchange of oils and toxins released with clean oils.

Also taking a good anti-oxidant regimen is good so you might want to, as budget allows, stock up on a good anti-oxidant supplement. Dr. Deagle has such on his Nutriceutical website (although the good stuff is a bit pricey).

Good. The more the better. Since we are all spread across the country everyone should have local references that will hopefully be of use by others.

Cool, thanks!

What about sweating via exercise? I'm just getting ready to go out and cycle about 16 miles for about an hour. That gets me sweating pretty good, is that the same as a sauna schwitz?

You're welcome.

As far as the cycling goes it depends on how high the particulate count is outside (while that is half joke the other half isn't). Any amount of heavy sweating is good. At one point I had a NordicTrac© and was up to 2 hours a day. By the time I got done you could literally wring the sweat out of my shorts and shirt. So, I got a lot of good effect from that. Even if you use the sauna you want to get your blood circulating so ten or fifteen minutes of moderate exercise should precede the bout in the sauna. A sauna is probably best but working up a good heavy sweat helps.
