Females with the highest levels of vitamin D were less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness

Drinking milk could help women ward off eye disease in later life, say researchers.

A study has found females with the highest levels of vitamin D were almost two-thirds less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the most common cause of blindness.

Around 200,000 Britons each year get AMD and there is no preventative treatment, although laser surgery and drugs can limit the damage caused by the condition.

It is the commonest cause of sight loss in people aged over 50, robbing people of the central vision necessary for reading, driving or simply recognising faces.

American researchers examined data on 1,313 women taking part in a large investigation of age-related eye disease.

They found that in women younger than 75, both vitamin D blood levels and consumption of the vitamin from food sources and supplements were linked to a reduced risk of early AMD.

Women with the highest vitamin D intake were 59 per cent less likely to develop the disease than those with the lowest.

But the protection was only seen with vitamin D consumed in foods and supplements, says a report in the medical journal Archives of Ophthalmology.

Time spent in the sun did not affect the level of risk, even though the most important source of vitamin D is its generation in the skin as a reaction to sunlight.

The top food sources of vitamin D among study participants were milk, fish, fortified margarine and fortified cereal.

Previous research suggested that higher consumption of omega 3 fish oils was protective.

Scientists led by Dr Amy Millen, from Buffalo University, New York State, said: ‘More studies are needed to verify this association as well as to better understand the potential interaction between vitamin D status and genetic and lifestyle factors with respect to risk of early AMD.’

Shhhh, the way things are going we're gonna need prescriptions for carrots, I'm guessing Big Pharma will want a lot more for wonder drugs that don't just grow in the ground. BTW, can we keep that whole apple-a-day thing on the QT whenever members of the AMA are within earshot?

I've been drinking milk all of my life, take D and Lutein, and my eyes are still getting worse.
The article only mentions women. Maybe it does nothing for men.
