CHICAGO— An Illinois State Senator wants a gun rights group to apologize for its use of Holocaust imagery. The group, "Gun Save Life," used the Israeli flag and the Star of David in an article against Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's plan to make the names of all gun owners in the state public.
The article appears to compare the plight of gun owners to Holocaust victims.
The left side of the picture has the phrase, "Armed, people fly their colors," with Israel's flag and a gun.
The right side says, "Disarmed, victims wear them," with a picture of a gold Star of David, like the ones Holocaust victims were forced to wear by the Nazis.
The title of the article is "Madigan's List," which is a play off the movie "Schindler's List."
State Senator Ira Silverstein is Jewish and is speaking out against "Gun Save Life."
Silverstein told the Chicago Sun-Times, "This is a poor analogy, a very poor analogy.. It brings back horrible memories. To compare this to Lisa Madigan is totally absurd."
"[This group] should think before they print these things," said Silverstein.
John Boch is the president of "Gun Save Life."
He told the Sun-Times that he was not willing to apologize.
"What is offensive is people wielding the victimhood card against others and trying to intimidate others out of their First Amendment rights. Sen. Silverstein ought to be thanking us for our advocacy of his First and Second Amendment rights, not whining and crying that he feels offended. He doesn't have a copyright on Holocaust imagery," said Boch.
"That image on the front of GunNews says a whole lot. The FOID Card information that could be made public is identifying Illinois gun owners. It's the first step toward what happened in Germany in the 1930s," said Boch.
