Montessori, Peace, and Libertarianism

by Stephan Kinsella

Previously by Stephan Kinsella: What Libertarianism Is

Among libertarians and Austrians, there is intense interest in the topic of how to educate children. Of course we are all averse to the idea of government schooling. This has led many libertarians to abandon government schools in favor of private schools or home-schooling, or even the seemingly odd approach of "unschooling."

One of the less conventional approaches to education is that spearheaded by Maria Montessori (1870-1952), the so-called Montessori Method. Many libertarians may have heard of this approach because Ayn Rand had positive things to say about it.

My son has been in The Post Oak School since he was 18 months old and is now in second grade (Lower Elementary).

Given the uniqueness of Montessori, I’m often asked about it, by libertarians and others. I can’t claim to be an expert, but below I’ll share some of my thoughts about Montessori and related aspects of parenting.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

Montessori and libertarianism have nothing to do with each other. Most Montessori schools are just as commie anti-white as the public schools.

Few blacks though. Big plus.

The developmental model is mostly nonsense.

Montessori techniques are often excellent for smart kids.

The problem with redirection is if used too much, kids don't learn to direct or control themselves. Redirection is just a fancy word for distraction.

the Montessori approach produces many members of the "creative elite,"

No, it doesn't.

After all, if a lower student to teacher ratio is better, then ideally it’s one to one.

Of course it is.

And when it's one-to-one, we don't call them teachers any more.

We call them tutors or mentors.

This is obviously unrealistic,

Unless you can hire tutors.

This can be seen in the schools, where kids are taught that they are all members of the human family, that we are children of the world

Cosmopolitans, whatever their stripe, are ultimately all enemies of humanity as it actually is.

"Whatever we do, it doesn't matter - they are animals," he cried in Spanish, when asked why the peacekeepers were not trying to explain anything in French or Creole.
