How's Glowbull Warming working in your area?

Around here it was snowing a couple of nights ago. Down right nippy today, although the sun is shining. It's been a long time since I've seen the amount of snow on the mountain peaks that we have right now. Looks like planting the garden will need to be pushed out several weeks as well.

Usually, by the end of April, I'm getting ready to climb a few mountains. Looks like the climbing will have to wait unless I want to bring along my snow boots and parka.

38 degrees here last night.

Owl Gore has left the building, leaving a dwindling number of psychos still clinging to the notion that the planet is melting. Their buying into that load is equivalent to someone stocking up on Spam during the height of the Y2K scare!

As you know, TX is literally on fire.

Hopefully, this week will bring us a cool front, and RAIN!

We're in the NW part of Austin, with mostly sane and smart people here.

Not too many homeless folks cooking their eggs and leaving them, to go off and buy some more beers, around here; unlike christine, who lives in the SW part of town, with many more parks, wildlife preserves, and potential campgrounds for the clueless.

It was developed about 25 years later, so the green requirements were in full-effect.

Don't move to Austin proper.

I'm in the upper Willamette Valley where the climate tends to be temperate and wet. Our Winter temperatures tend to stay mostly above freezing and we had no significant snowfall this year on the valley floor.

Having said that though we are now, and have been, colder than normal on average. This year we had our record latest date ever for a day of 60 degrees or warmer. Normally by now we have had at least a few days touch the lower 80's and so far I don't think we have had one day over the low 70's and only 2 or 3 of those. We have a rare frost warning out for tonight.

Generally by now the weather has warmed to the point where most days are in at least the low to mid 60's and we have been staying mostly in the 50's.

The last 2 years melon varieties that I have grown successfully in the past succumbed to various fungal rots. To say the least we are staying colder than normal and this year I will only grow short season melon varieties. I only have one tomato plant out already and will have to cover it for frost protection tonight.

My Aunt in Billings said they were forecast for 2 inches of snow today - thankfully the storm moved east and all they got was some very cold rain.

Wonder how this will impact the cantaloupes....

Since they need a lot of heat to ripen and reach their best sweetness my guess is that they will be late and not be as sweet.

North Texas: hotter 'n hell since the beginning of March and dodging tornadoes. I blew off spring turkey season (all of April) because it was too damn hot every day and the ticks in the woods were really out of control by the end of March.

Uuuhhhgggg X, those tornadoes do not look like any fun at all. I was just watching some clips of the last swarm of 165 that did so much damage and my mouth was agape with the force, speed and devastation left in their wake.

Those turkeys got lucky this year. : )

I was fearful that would be the most likely outcome......last two years, I haven't had enough heat to get 'em full grown and ripe before the frost. Three years ago I had some do great. No luck with pumpkins the past two years either.

I would suggest going for shorter maturity varieties. They tend to be smaller but at least they'll ripen. Some to consider:

Emerald Gem - small heirloom, smooth skin, luscious orange flesh. Not the absolute best but pretty darn good and very productive. One year I had 18 melons on just 4 plants ripen all together in one day. I was very popular in the neighborhood. Available from Baker Creek Seed Co.. Pick on the full slip.

Jenny Lind - green flesh and sweet - was grown by Thomas Jefferson. Heavily netted. Pick on the full slip.

Golden Jenny - orange flesh and when they come out right they are just scrumptious. Later than the original, but one of the best small musk melons you can grow - very richly flavored and very productive. Heavily netted. Up to 10 melons per plant. Pick on the full slip.

Charentais - French Heirloom - smooth skinned with no netting and no musk flavor. This true Cantaloupe, as opposed to a Musk Melon (which is really what most American Melons are) is the best of the best when it comes out right. A little later than the others but it is delightful. The only "10" I've ever grown. Will continue to ripen in cooler weather but is susceptible to Powdery Mildew so you need to use a good organic fungicide. Charentais are hard to judge when they are ripe. They will not slip from the vine when ripe. With them you have to watch the color as it goes from a gray green to kind of a creamy gray-green and smell them. Then cut them from the vine and hope you judged right. Very aromatic and if you leave one on the counter it will flood the house with its luscious aroma.

Ogen or sometimes Ha' Ogen. Green Fleshed and honey sweet with a nice citrusy smell. Unlike honeydews this actually has flavor - very complex and very sweet almost spicy. Originally from Hungary it is grown in Israel for export to the European Gourmet Trade. Very very rarely seen in U.S. Markets. Ripens to a very pretty gold mottled with green. And it is large for an early melon - averaging around 3 pounds. Very little netting - mostly smooth skinned. Pick on the full slip.

Rocky Ford/Eden's Gem (two names for the same melon) An American heirloom that is small, early, and a luscious delight. Green fleshed. Heavily netted. Pick on the full slip.

I'm a good month or two off from any berries. The Blueberries are blooming but it will be a while yet. The Raspberries and Strawberries are growing to beat the band and the Strawberries are just now beginning to set fruit.

The Blackberries will be more into July-August.

Come to Florida dear. We dont have mountains (actually we do, but it's such a gentle slope no one knows it), but we currently have dry upper 70's to 90 temps, oil free beaches, forest hiking trails, and a naked Armadillo running around.
Bring sunscreen. I got a full-body sunburn. Ouch.

The weather sounds lovely, but you don't have mountains Sweetie. You have hills and the highest one in FL is a whopping 344 feet above sea level. lol

I was planning on climbing Mt. Rose again, which is 10,776 feet at the summit and Mt. Lassen, which is 10,462 at the top, and Freel Peak at 10,886. Towards the end of the summer, I want to take on one of the 14K foot summits in CA on a multiple day trip.

That full body sunburn sounds painful. Poor Dillo!! Hope you have some Aloe Vera and a Vera to slather it on. : )

Well, they have "mountian" in their names. :)
Iron Mountain, Sugarloaf Mountain.
And Im loaded up on 100% Aloe Vera gel. That stuff is wonderful. I need a bathtub full to soak in.
A "Vera" would be nice, or even a "Donna". I'm not picky. ;).

You must be in good shape to be climbing some real mountains. Climbing 10776 feet would kill me. I'm sure the climbing is fun. Too bad about the Gore-Effect snow eveywhere.

Climbing gets me in better shape. A tad soft after finishing up all my research projects and such.

Sea level to 10K would require a bit of acclimation. : ) Mount Rose is a few hours to go up and down, there's a trail head at about 5 miles from the summit, leaving about 2000 feet in elevation to climb up. Here's a picture from Slide Mountain on one trail~

And from the summit you can see Lake Tahoe:

Just guessing, but it sounds like "Golden Jenny". It was handled by Baker Creek Seed Co. but appears to be no longer available. As near as I can tell it has been replaced by an improved version from the same grower. Sleeping Beauty Melon.

The only time in my life that I have ever experienced altitude sickness was doing a fast hike from the campground at Miller Lake to Maidu Lake to do a little morning fishing. This is in the Cascades near Crater Lake. I started at about 6,600 and it was up to about 8,000. Durn fool thing - I just never thought of it because I had never experienced it before at any altitude I had hiked at. It was no doubt mainly because I was pushing hard all the way up so I could get there early enough in the morning. Took me two days to get over the headache.

Yes, speed can be an enemy when moving upward by thousands of feet. For folks who are generally acclimated at around 5K it is less of a problem to move upward double that. But folks who are used to sea level, like Dillo, need additional time to get used to moving with less oxygen supply.

When I take on about 14K, those are generally guided hikes with a well planned camp over at the higher altitude to acclimate. Still, folks who would never think to have an effects from it often encounter some. One friend who is in very good shape experienced this last summer, along with many others. : )

I think you hit the nail on the head. Too many years now living at sea level myself. Where I live now I'm only about 200 feet above sea level. When I was a kid in Anaconda we were already slightly over a mile above sea level and it never bothered me even when we went backpacking into the "high" mountains. My first backpacking trip was at age 7 up to Twin Lakes in North Central to Northeast Montana and we had to have been up around 9,000. The only thing I noticed was the damn mosquitoes. Good fishing though. ;-)

Here's the flip side......if I went to Florida, having been used to much thinner air, I would be stronger than I am here because my body has learned to do more with less. Sea level is like steroids for me, only much safer......lol
