eReaders have been in the news a lot lately as their popularity continues to grow. Recently it was announced that eBooks had overtaken the sales of paperbacks in the US for the first time. The Amazon Kindle was really the device that started the market along its way after it was first released by Amazon. Now there is news that Walmart is to start selling Amazon’s Kindle device.

Reuters are reporting that the company who have just been named top of the Fortune 500 list, will start stocking the device this week. The device can already be found in other retailers stores such as Best Buy and Target, but it will now be found in Walmart's 3,100 retail stores.

The Kindle has been the highest selling eReader device since it was first released in 2007, but more recently has come under increased competition from the Nook, and of course the iPad. The Wi-Fi and 3G Kindle’s will priced similar to what Amazon charge via its website, which starts at $114.

Whether Walmart might offer some promotions on the pricing remains to be seen, as Amazon wouldn’t want the device sold cheaper than what it charges itself. The retailer may offer some extra goodies to go with the device though.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters." - Ben Franklin

There are about a dozen different eReaders on the market, some extremely obscure - and sometimes tied to a specialized book collection.

I expect there will be a few years of market shake-out, much like the competition between VHS and Beta, and finally one eReader will emerge victorious, at which point the book collections affiliated with other brands will make themselves available through the winner.

Just think about how easy it will be to eliminate books and control what people read once they're all only available "online."

Welcome to "Fahrenheit 451"

There is one advantage which a "real" book retains - it never has its batteries run low.

I don't think that they will ever completely replace real books, but they are convenient for some things - such as bus and train commuters.

Remember The White Rose
"“Believe nothing merely because you have been told it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings - that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” ~ Gautama Siddhartha — The Buddha
