A statement from kiwifruit marketer Zespri International, which has a monopoly over New Zealand kiwifruit exports, said it had been notified by the Public Health Service and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) that a Bay of Plenty-based kiwifruit picker had contracted the gastrointestinal bacterial disease, typhoid. The picker was being monitored in hospital and was expected to be discharged Friday, said the statement. "The person is an overseas worker, and public health officials believe they had the illness before entering New Zealand. "A risk assessment has been undertaken by the Public Health Service and MAF food safety officials and although the risk that any fruit is affected is extremely low, ZESPRI has taken the proactive and precautionary measure of containing any fruit that may have come into contact with the affected worker." The 100,000 trays represented less than 0.1 percent of the company's expected exports of more than 100 million trays of kiwifruit this year. It said 30,000 trays of fruit already en route to foreign markets would be destroyed on arrival. Kiwifruit Growers chief executive Mike Chapman told Radio New Zealand that the picker had a mandatory health check and x-ray before he left the Pacific Islands. Chapman said no other orchard workers have tested positive for typhoid fever. Editor: Zhang Xiang
