Title: Firefox question for all of you guru's out there

I recently upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1. It looks a little different than the last version, which is no big deal except that I cannot find the little yellow lock symbol that normally appears when you are on a secure shopping site.

So the question is, how do I tell whether or not the site is secure?

Has anyone else noticed this?

That badge is gone and the code to support it has been removed.

The new Site Identity button (the icon just to the left of your URL address bar) has more complete information on security.

It appears there is no way to bring back the lock icon with an extension. Hopefully, they will improve the Site Identity button to indicate more clearly the status of encryption. And you can always look at the address bar for https:.

[a little later...]

I checked further and there are a few solutions.

userstyles.org: Firefox 4 Lock Icon for Secure Sites This is for use only with the Stylish extension installed.

There is also a stand-alone extension for this: Padlock 0.1.2

If you already have Stylish, try the first script. Otherwise, try the extension, Padlock.

Last time I "upgraded" Firefox it crapped out completely and would "forget" the last session (didn't load the pages from the last time). So I started using Opera. I already had it on my computer and so far it hasn't "forgotten."

That's probably why I don't see it. I have WOT installed so that my kids know when a site is not safe. That is where WOT button sits. It must be overriding the Site Identity button. That sucks.

And you can always look at the address bar for https:.

Ah. I didn't know that. Thank you.

I guess I've lucked out as I haven't had any problems yet. Just this security issue, which TC clued me in on.

Quite often, you have an old configuration in the user identity files in your Firefox configuration.

Sometimes, you have to create a new user identity in Firefox and then just transfer your bookmarks and re-enter your passwords.

If you are a guru at Firefox, you can go into the SQLite database in Firefox 3 or later to manipulate a lot of stuff manually. Install the SQLite 0.6.8 extension (or later) to have a powerful SQL database editor of the tons of database settings in Firefox 3 and later version.

You can use a text editor to fix a lot of other user stuff in the user settings folder, including modifying your own extensions. To find the profile folder on Windows XP and later, look for the following folder:

C:_Documents and Settings_Your_User_Name_Application Data_Mozilla_Firefox [replace _ with backslashes]
This will allow you to find the profiles.ini config file and the Profiles folder itself. [Naturally, to find these folders, you should be logged in as administrator and have to make hidden and system files visible in Windows Explorer's Folder Options.]

Sometimes an upgrade will fail if you have modified your about:config settings. (You can look at these by entering "about:config" in your address bar. You can learn a lot in there but do not change anything if you don't understand it!

Cool. I attempted to download padlock but it tells me that it is incompatible with my Firefox. For some reason it thinks I am using 3.5.2. I know I am not because if I go to help and the to "About Firefox," it states that I am on version 4.0.1. Hell, I was on 3.6.? prior to the upgrade so I have no idea what it its talking about.

I would suggest rebooting if you haven't done so since the FF4 upgrade.

BTW, that part in my previous post about finding your Profiles folder and .ini file? You can back up that folder and use it to downgrade to a previous version. You can also put it on a memory stick and use that to synchronize all your browser settings, bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, literally everything, from one machine to another, as long as both machines have the same version of Firefox. I make a backup of mine every few months, just in case. And I transfer it to my laptop to keep it in sync with my main computer. Very handy.

Of course, this advice is too late to help you. You already upgraded so it probably changed your Profile and you probably couldn't use the new profile to downgrade back to FF3.

I am using Firefox 4.01 on Ubuntu 11.04 with no problems whatsoever. It is more stable than the latest 3.x version and is faster too.

God is always good!

FF tends to upgrade automatically. Mine is working fine though I was using the google tool bar and now it is gone.

Thanks for all the info. I am pretty happy with Opera now--used to use Firefox and recommended it to everyone but I don't since it started getting dementia and forgetting the last things it was doing.

Another charming extension, very simple: InstantFox

Does a variety of searches from the address bar, g for Google, m for Google Maps, w for Wikipedia, y for Youtube, etc.

FF tends to upgrade automatically.

Only if you let it. I don't.

But I'll let it upgrade in a few days. I don't like being the guinea pig for any v1.0 or v2.0 or v3.0, etc. It's fewer headaches to let the upgrade wait a month or so to stabilize and get the bugs out.

Did you get Padlock to install? Is it satisfactory?

BTW, there is another extension to replace the RSS icon that showed in the address bar (on the right side of FF3's address bar). It indicates that the page has an RSS feed and you could add the feed just by clicking the RSS icon. In FF4, they took it out (so you have to hunt on the page to click it).

RSS Icon v1.0.6

The removal of the lock icon and the RSS icon are the two items most bitched about in FF4.
