BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police nationwide have solved more than 1,000 cases that "severely" jeopardized food safety so far this year in the latest efforts to clean up the scandal-prone food industry.

In a special crackdown on the use of clenbuterol, a fat-burning drug used by violators to feed pigs to prevent them from accumulating fat, police seized 135 suspects and destroyed eight workshops that illegally produced the chemical, according to a statement released Thursday by the Ministry of Public Security.

Police also destroyed four stockhouses and confiscated some 2,000 kilograms of clenbuterol along with a large number of manufacturing equipment, the statement said.

According to the statement, the country's police have been intensifying regional cooperation and giving priority to food crime investigations.

"Some local police departments have adopted innovative measures such as setting up special food crime investigating organs and publicizing complaint hotlines in order to take initiative in checking and cracking down on food crimes," said the statement.

In addition, the ministry vowed a strengthened crackdown on food safety crimes and "severe punishment" for violators. Editor: Bi Mingxin

It's a dilemma. Consumers squawk about too much fat in pork; don't want to pay extra price for raising hogs organically with less fat. Farmers try to find ways of producing lean pork without considering/being aware of possible health implications.

Simple Solution: Don't eat Pork.

Problem solved.

See, wasn't that easy?

Remember The White Rose
"“Believe nothing merely because you have been told it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings - that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” ~ Gautama Siddhartha — The Buddha

Some people can likely get necessary nutrients from a vegetarian diet; others are probably better off to include meats which offer the best assurance of getting the necessary balance of particularly amino acids to build body parts and enzymes. Just digestion alone requires some 60 hormones. Thus pork once or so a week helps do the job. Plant foods don't have as good a balance of protein components so you're asking for trouble if you short change your little homunculus.

Even if you can afford fish these days its not wise to restrict yourself to it:

Salmon is apparently smart food. (How smart can food be when it struggles up a river, leaps up waterfalls, meets a gal, spawns once then dies?) Several serious scientific studies are verifying the observation that populations who consume cold water fish have significantly lower risks of heart disease and sudden cardiac death. Omega 3 fatty acids may turn out to be nature’s heart specialists. The skinny on these fats is that they can protect our hearts in several fascinating ways. Eskimos, for example, are found to have lower LDL cholesterol, thinner blood, less fatty plaques in the arteries, less heart rhythm disturbances and very rarely suffer cardiac disease. While this may be due to the fact that each blood cell is wearing protective wooly underwear, heart attack to an Eskimo occurs only when a harpoon misfires and nails Nanook near the nipples. The high fish consumption of the Japanese also translates into considerably lower rates of heart attacks. Omega 3’s are now also being implicated as a major player in decreasing depression, preventing premature and low birth weight babies, and through it’s an anti-inflammatory effects possibly reducing the ravages of diseases like asthma, arthritis and Crohn’s disease. Colorectal breast and prostate cancers are also possible targets of omega 3’s. But it is the studies of omega 3’s on the heart that are most intriguing. One study indicated that men who ate 2-3 servings of fatty fish per week had 30% less heart attacks than those who ate a “healthy” high fibre diet! I now tell all my patients with high cholesterol, “Bloggins, you have high cholesterol.” I also tell them to stop eating saturated and trans fats and to gulp down three servings per week of broiled or baked cold water fish. Mackerel, salmon and herring are highest in omega 3. Trout, halibut and tuna also have omega 3. In fact, after years of intense nutritional research, I have determined that the three most important foods to incorporate in our diet are broccoli, salmon and Snickers. But can eating too much fish be a problem? Only if the fish is loaded in PCB’s, DDT’s or other contaminants. Some fish are so full of mercury that they can take their own temperatures by sticking their fin in their cloaca. So younger, smaller fish are preferable, as older larger fish may have accumulated more toxins. Omega 3’s can also be found in supplements. But more important than the actual amount of omega 3’s consumed, is the ratio of the 3’s to the omega 6’s. Even though omega 6’s (found in vegetable oils, pork, chicken etc.) are not saturated fats, too many omega 6’s can compete with the omega 3’s and prevent them from being activated by the body.
