The selfless and courageous men who were responsible for this nation's birth as a free nation were, for the most part, filled with a sense of destiny. Washington, for example, while exhorting his troups, stated in the course of his famous address to the Continental Army, before the Battle of Long Island "The fate of unborn millions will now depend, Bunder God, on the courage and conduct of this army. Our cruel and 'unrelenting enemy leaves! us only the choice of brave resistance, or the most abject submission. We have, therefore, to resolve to conquer or die."

Thomas Paine's pen was perhaps the most potent weapon in bringing about the downfall of British tyranny, since it helped spark resistance to the crown and a determination to route oppression from the shores of America. He likewise had a sense of destiny which was expressed in one of his "Crisis Papers", published late in 1776.

In this particular piece, he grapbicajly excoriated the Tories as cowards. He noted that a Tory who kept a tavern "was standing at his door with as pretty a child in his hands, about eight or nine years old, as I ever saw, and after speaking his mind as freely as he thought was prudent, finished with the unfatherly expression, "Well, give me peace in my day."

• Both Washington'and Paine, along with the majority of their. «>llec'«'An' !~ •. thoise" e'vehfful . days, 'were seriously concerned about, the long-range effects of their actions.They were not merely concerned about peace in their day, and material success. They were not interested in compromising with tyranny for benefits which would only be of passing advantage to the best interests of freedom and the general welfare of the citizens of the 13 colonies. America was fortunate, indeed to have such a band of visionaries, of zealots, of patriots, of intellectuals, rough-hewn and gently bred, all bound together in one accord to achieve freedom for both themselves and their posterity.

As we look into the glass today, we must see darkly indeed. The shadows are lengthening on the time left for this country as one of free men and women, who are able to speak and write what they believe without fear, unless they awake to the currents which are bearing them onward to their destruction.

Too long have we comprised with tyranny • throughout the world and the forces which would destroy us from within.

What kind of an America are we leaving our children, so that we may have a few more years of peace and -m a ter-ia l-pl eas-ur-e-?—The-fr-ee-en+ter-pr-i-se system, the greatest machine for the production of goods, ever invented by man,.is being driven upon the shoals by the forces of greed and deceit. Public debt is being piled on public deficit, and still we are working four months of every year, merely to pay our taxes.

How long will our children be working to meet this-same commitment? The 'valueTof the dollar has been allowed to sink to all-time lows as pious hypocrites constantly promote the expenditure of money for more and more projects whose ultimate result ca.n only be the bankrupting of this country and the debauchery of its currency.

Panels and commissions and concerned men who have retired as generals and admirals from the armed forces have raised their voices in alarm at the-growing disparity in military might which now weighs so heavily in favor of Russia. Still this country must do more to appease a communist tyranny which has shown Hittle indication that it has picked up the olive branch. On the contrary, it has proved itself to be as deceptive and implacably hostile as it ever has. There is no indication that the goal of world-wide conquest of the so-qalled free world has been abandoned. We export needed grain at a discount, raising havoc with our own price structure. We invite the head of this . state to our country to discuss further accommodations that will hopefully avert eventual war.

Thomas Paine once stated, "These are the times which try men's souls." They were, and the men of that day were capable and equipped by temperament and desire to fight for and establish a free nation.

It has grown and prospered through nearly 200 years. It now stands in the greatest danger in its history. It is confronted from without, but the greatest danger lies within. "We have met the enemy, and they are. US."

The enemy is compromise with.what_ is-right. It is constant accommodation with expediency, rather than a confrontation with the problems confronting this country. Our birthright as free Americans is being sold in the name of security, social progress, and welfare.

The free loaders call the tune, and the bureaucrats dance as the taxpayers pay the piper.

Profits, the main spring which has kept this country in the forefront as one of unparalleled affluence and material wellbeing, is being pushed info disrepute. Controls, once an anathema to free thinking people are being hailed by all too many as the means to our salvation.

Before the American people can route the enemy from their shores, they must recognize it for what it is. They must awaken soon to their danger. They must be awakened by modern day Tom Paines, George Washingtons, and Thomas Jeffersons who are alert to the danger, and who have the courage to "tell it as it is."

Otherwise, this country most assuredly will sink into oblivion, the victim of its own short-sightedness, wishful thinking, sloth, and apathy. Eternal vigilance is the ' price of freedom. The people have been asleep, as certain forces under pretext and false design, and others, duped by their unscrupulous confederates' or

motivated by their big hearts and little minds, have gradually stolen away much of the substance of freedom leaving shadows, which are still ac- cepted by many as the substance.

America must awake! Where are the modern-day Jeffersons, the Patrick Henrys, and the Tom Paines? This country needs them now, as never before, and so do tomorrow's generations and those yet unborn)!!

I'm not sure. Sounds like Communism and other Controlling interests were on the march in the marketplace. Commerce isn't entitled Constitutionally to be absolutely unregulated just because people are affiliated with it by ownership and transactions. Commerce is especially not entitled to be even less restricted than people are from causing harm, theiving, and what not. Ergo, I'm not so gung-ho on the idea that the markets should be completely free to demolish the many for the enrichment of the elitist few, but nice post. :)

We are now living in a police state EXACTLY like the Soviets under Stalin and the Germans under Hitler lived under.

The only difference is we still haven't seen the firing squads or open door-to-door executions yet.

If history tells us ANYTHING, it tells us America is NO EXCEPTION, and it WILL happen here.

Anytime you have a nation where people live in complete FEAR of the government, and the government continually clearly STEALING CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, you are living in a POLICE STATE.

All that is necessary for this to go full circle is for our elected representative to sit back (IN COMPLETE FEAR) and DO COMPLETELY NOTHING.
