We got three and an eighth inches of rain yesterday. A quarter inch the day before. Rain coming in now. Forecast for rain tomorrow. Rain every day. I've decided not to wade into work today.

According to the local weather station, the farmers only have 49% of the crops in the ground. It should be 76% at least.

In Ohio it's only 11%, should be 80%. Millions of acres are under water near the Misissippi River. Big droughts in the southwest.

Best be gettin' ready for some serious increases in prices and shortages soon.

That isn't all that much really.

I recall about 7 years back, we had had 3-4 inches of rain over a two-day steady rain, got things good and muddy on the fields and dirt roads. Then the big storm came, dumped five inches of rain in less than 2 hours. The storm went north, then circled back to the east, and came right back after only an hour or so. It dumped another five inches of rain on us.

Given how sodden the soil already was, it washed out entire roads, created giant holes, eroded canyons. And there was the historic flooding. I'd never seen anything remotely like it. Destructive doesn't cover it. Everyone was kind of in shock for a month or more. My dirt driveway had a hole 300' long, 6' wide, 3-4' deep right down the middle of it.

Many people think that a 10+ inch rain is freakish (and it is) but they do happen more than you think in some parts of the country.

Yes, and a lot of the fields that have been planted are now lakes. That seriously reduces yields.

The local weather channel is saying we've had 9.13 inches of rain so far this month, making it the wettest May ever. We're 8.97 inches above normal so far this year.

The morning check of Esso's big effin' rain gauge says we got a little over an inch yesterday. We may get a break today, but they're calling for a chance of rain Sat-Sun. My yard & garden is a mucky mess.

A farmer acquaintance tells me that if he can't get his field corn in by June 1, there's no point in planting, it won't have time to dry. There goes the cost of meat.

Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. Prosperity is just around the corner.
Mike Flaherty: Yeah, it's been there a long time. I wish I knew which corner.
