I've drunk alcohol before, but not in a long long time. I'm just not a drinker.
But this weekend I got a room at the local nudist club where I will be staying for three days. I decided, since I wont be driving anywhere, I might as well get plastered. Maybe it would help me loosen up and improve my social skills. And if I do something crazy, like walk around naked, it's a nudist resort... no one will care.

So I got a 6 pack of Bud. Not that light junk either, the real stuff.
This afternoon after diner I popped open a can and drank.

This stuff sucks. How do you people stand this sh*t? Yuck.

And dont tell me "of course it sucks, it's BUD. Drink brand XYZ!"
No, no, no. This stuff sucks in ways that transcend brands. And the burps taste just as bad. Maybe if I drank more I would get used to it... I dont want to get used to it. Yuck.
I managed to gag down enough to get a slight buzz. Now I have a 5 pack of beer left.
Yuck.

With a good beer the flavor transcends the alcohol. Of course I'm partial to Guinness but there are a lot of good lighter beers and ales. Bud is bilge water - mass produced schlock - not quite the dregs of the brewer's art, but close.

Anchor Steam is a good Lager - although I am partial to Grolsch which is brewed in the Netherlands.

Chimay Ale, available at Trader Joe's, is simply stunning. It's brewed by Trappist Monks to support their Monastery. So, you are donating to a worthy cause as well.

I buy what my local Grocery Outlet has that I like. If they don't have something I like I don't buy beer. Simple solution. While I enjoy a good beer from time to time it is one of those things I don't miss if I don't have any for a while. Although they usually have something acceptable - including a few Organic Beers.

Each to their own. I'm a purist - I don't smoke flavored cigars, drink flavored coffee, or adulterate beer with anything. Ditto Single Malt.

Now if you want something nice that sounds strange till you try it, try a Charlie Burch. Vodka and Root Beer - preferably A&W.

Yeah, ditto here. These days I probably have 0-8 beers per month depending upon the time of year, rarely more than two at once.

I find that not having had one in a while makes me enjoy the next one that much more. I'm somewhat of a connoisseur, at least for non-heavy-hop beers.

Mine usually comes as an accompaniment to food, for dark beers, occasionally just sipping, and I like a nice lager at the end of a hot summer day. Two is generally my limit as well. I find that I simply don't enjoy getting bombed the way I did as a kid. I got out of the habit and have no desire to get it back. I love a good dark beer with authentic Fish and Chips. It's just so, so, so British. ;-)

It's not so much the not getting bombed, which agreed, isn't on the agenda anymore, LOL, but the calories. It's tough enough staying fit and in shape as I/we age, I really am watching the calories and quality of food I eat. I've all but eliminated anything processed from my diet.

Just think of it as a health food. Beer is loaded with B Vitamins and a small amount of alcohol helps keep the arteries clean. Of course a little good red wine is helpful too as it is loaded with anti-oxidants. I don't know about the Single Malt though - I'll have to research that one more. ;-)

I once knew a lady who was the XO for a scout troop and she happened to win Scouting's Silver Beaver Award.

I never knew what all the laughter was about until later in life.

My Explorer Post Adviser was into Beaver. Unfortunately she was already married and her husband and his very Catholic wife did not approve. Got rather messy as I recall.

B-Vitamins in beer, ... really?

Yup.

While knowledgeable about wine, largely from my days as a waiter and nicer restaurants, I do not really enjoy wine that much although I can appreciate good wines and will drink them at weddings and the like. I do drink purple grape juice though and it's my understanding that it has the same health properties.

I love a good red with food. I'm just not partial to getting lit up anymore. I do keep a few bottles around for special occasions. Beaujolais is probably my favorite - fruity and not so dry you feel like you need a water chaser. The only place I like a dry red is in a sauce. I was able to pick up a couple bottles of a really nice Rose from Provence - that was the nectar of the Gods.

What do you mean about the Single Malt?

Oh, I was joking - I can think of no redeeming value other that it tastes good and is Scottish. "IF IT'S NOT SCOTTISH IT'S CRAP!"

PS I don't think that beer is unhealthy, but the alcohol is empty calories, eh.

Can I plead the Fifth on that?

Oh, on the Charlie Burch - a good substitute for A&W, since you can't get REAL A&W anymore, is Boylan Bottleworks Root Beer. It tastes the way Root Beer used to taste - good - and it uses real cane sugar and real natural ingredients.

Akvavit then. Frozen in a block of ice, traditionally, and then you take straight shots and just dump them down the hatch in one gulp. You don't taste much - it just kind of explodes in your stomach.

That's part of the reason for my two drink limit. Two I find pleasurable and three gives me at least a little hangover.

In my younger days you could always tell when I was serious about getting lit up. I would have my traditional starting gate drink - a double Chivas on the rocks.

I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Tough to find good real-sugar root beers.

I don't know if you have "Big Lots" stores in your area, but that is where I get it here on the left coast. It's actually made in Joisy. I have seen it on line but it is almost double what I pay at Big Lots and then you have to pay shipping. Their Cream Soda is pretty good too. I don't drink Cream Soda real often but sometimes in the summer and the bottle is really really cold ... I haven't tried their Birch Beer but am told that it is excellent as well.

Yes - 75¢ a bottle is a pretty good price any more - particularly for a real cane sugar sweetened soda. Jones Soda is usually a buck and a half for a 12 ounce bottle - and that is about standard for most of the real honest to heaven cane sugar sweetened sodas. Unfortunately Sodium Benzoate seems to have become the standard preservative for pop. I have not tried the orange personally - I'm not much of an orange soda drinker.

As for carrying it in your restaurant - from what I read on a website Boylans started out as kegs only - and stayed that way for a long time. The availability bottled is relatively recent. So, I'm sure they are restaurant friendly. Served icy cold in frozen mugs would bring back the TASTE of yesteryear - when all sodas were made from natural ingredients and sweetened with real cane sugar. My other favorite, and hard to find, is a real Green River.
