WASHINGTON (AP) — Government and airline officials say a United Airlines plane with 144 people aboard returned to Washington-Dulles International Airport for an emergency landing escorted by two F-16 fighter jets after a fight broke out between passengers.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown says Flight 990 bound for Accra, Ghana, returned to Dulles in Chantilly, Virginia, just after midnight Sunday after a fistfight in the cabin.

Government officials confirmed that fighter jets were scrambled from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

United spokesman Mike Trevino said Tuesday that the Boeing 767 dumped fuel as a safety precaution to lighten its weight on landing.

The Washington Post, which first reported the incident, reported that the fight began not long after takeoff when a passenger lowered his seat and a passenger behind him objected.

Poster Comment:

The pilots had to dump a large amount of fuel into the Atlantic in order to land the jet. This was a ridiculous over reaction. Both should have been told to sit down and STFU. Of course since 9/11, situations like these will cause over reactions since passengers might be terrorists. /s

Air travel used to be special, and the passengers weren't treated like dumb cattle:

All planes should have a Rottweiler on it named "Balls."

Early in 2001 there were a couple of proposals in Congress to change the regulations for airlines to assure that passengers were more comfortable -- a very important factor in reducing "air rage" which seems to come from a combination of fear and discomfort (not to mention the extreme pain -- and possible fatal results -- from Deep Vein Thrombosis that can come from the cramped sitting position over several hours). But the very thought vanished with the Sept. 11th attacks. So now passengers have fear, discomfort, and the humiliation and stress that comes from the check-in frisking, plus being packed like sardines. I'm just surprised that this sort of thing didn't happen sooner.

Of course, a piece of this may come from passengers who are unfamiliar with how people are supposed to behave on a US plane. In some parts of the Third World, passengers have actually set up little stoves for their own meals inside the passenger cabin (which explains some of those plane crashes).

I thought a air Marshall was aboard all flights now? What was he doing while these two were fighting and they turned the plane around? sleeping?

God is always good!

This is actually a crime for which these two low_grades should be arrested & convicted. I'd vote to send them to jail for a year plus probation. That will be appropriate punishment & teach them not to act like loons onn an airplane.

It happens on sub-par airlines in the Middle East/Africa all the time. They even bring their goats on the aircraft. Air travel is NOT the same world-wide ;- )

No, it's still a random occasion when they're on an airliner.
