An estimated 200 tons of herbal chrysanthemums contaminated by a banned toxic chemical has entered the market, cnr.cn reported Thursday.

The herbal flower, which is often used by Chinese in tea and medicine, is believed to have been dried with sulfur dioxide, a prohibited preservative that can cause sickness.

Dubbed China's herbal town, Yangma County in Jiangsu province produces 2,000 tons of chrysanthemums each year. It is suspected 200 tons of the herb are contaminated.

Using the chemical, which was banned in 2005, in the drying process makes the herb sour and weakens its effect which could lead to poisoning.

"Farmers using sulfur-drying methods can make more profit, saving the cost of electricity and coal as much as 4,000 yuan ($595) to 5000 yuan per ton," a unnamed manager of a chrysanthemum processing company said.

The manager added that sulfur-dried chrysanthemums sold well because it can not be detected and claimed the sulfur flavor of the chrysanthemums will fade away in a month if stored in a ventilated room.

However, the quality watchdog said the sulfur remained in the herb and will harm people's health even if the smell has gone, the report said.

Sulfur can be found commonly in nature as sulphides. During several processes sulfur bonds are added to the environment that are damaging to animals, as well as humans. These damaging sulphur bonds are also shaped in nature during various reactions, mostly when substances that are not naturally present have already been added. They are unwanted because of their unpleasant smells and are often highly toxic.

Globally sulphuric substances can have the following effects on human health:

- Neurological effects and behavioural changes - Disturbance of blood circulation - Heart damage - Effects on eyes and eyesight - Reproductive failure - Damage to immune systems - Stomach and gastrointestinal disorder - Damage to liver and kidney functions - Hearing defects - Disturbance of the hormonal metabolism - Dermatological effects - Suffocation and lung embolism

Supplements: Sulfer

Sulfur is a mineral naturally occurring near hot springs and volcanic craters. The "rotten egg" smell of sulfur mineral baths is caused by sulfur dioxide gas escaping into the air. Sulfur has been used medicinally since ancient times, and it is contained in every cell in your body. It is a component of three different amino acids (the building blocks that make up protein). Approximately 0.25 percent of your total body weight is sulfur. It is most concentrated in keratin, which gives you strong hair, nails, and skin. It is known as "nature's beauty mineral" because your body needs it to manufacture collagen, which keeps your skin elastic and young-looking.

Sulfur is used primarily to ease the red, itchy rashes of conditions such as eczema and diaper rash. It also helps to protect your body against toxins in the environment. In addition, people with arthritis may find pain relief from taking a soothing bath in hot sulfur springs.

Uses

Used primarily to treat the red, itchy discomfort of eczema, diaper rash, dry scalp, hemorrhoids, and similar conditions Sulfur baths can help relieve arthritis pain. In recent years, the benefits of garlic have been widely studied. Research suggests that the beneficial effects of garlic in lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure are likely due to the sulfur it contains. Necessary for the body to make collagen—the substance in your skin that keeps it elastic, young-looking, and wrinkle-free. Aids in certain digestive disorders, especially acid reflux, indigestion made worse by milk, chronic diarrhea, and vomiting in the morning. Can help gynecological problems such as premenstrual syndrome and menopausal discomforts.
