Title: Deadly Fungus Strikes Joplin Tornado Survivors, Volunteers

The Greene County (Mo.) Health Department has issued a memo to health care workers who are treating injured victims of May's deadly Joplin tornado, warning them that a powerful fungus has infected patients' wounds.

The Springfield News-Leader reports as many as nine cases have been reported in tornado victims across the area in various hospitals. Once the aggressive fungus -- called zygomycosis -- enters the body, it causes the death of infected cells. Three or four patients, who otherwise would have survived their wounds, have died from it.

If the fungus stays in a limb, like an arm or leg, some treatments have necessitated amputation to save the patient. Others with wounds near the head weren't so lucky -- as soon as brain tissue started dying, it was too late to save the patient.

The National Institutes of Health says this rapid form of infection most often occurs in patients with suppressed immune systems. One study in 2009 noted a diabetes patient who died of the fungal infection at age 48. Despite being treated early, the man's health rapidly declined as the fungus spread through his lungs.

Infections spread through the blood and affects blood circulation. It is unknown how many people may be suffering from infections, but the problem doesn't stop with those injured by the tornado.

KYTV in Springfield reports those helping with cleanup efforts may become scratched by nails or splinters and any fungus residue on those objects may infect someone.

Anyone with diabetes should be extremely careful. The National Institutes of Health lists severe symptoms of the infection: fever, headache, sinus pain, and swelling. Complications that can arise from these fungal infections include nerve damage, blindness, blood clots to the brain and lungs, or even death in extreme cases.

Cases of the deadly fungal infection have shown up in massive disasters before such as the 2004 tsunami off the coast of Indonesia. Health officials in Greene County stated in their memo that this particular infection is "invasive" and that aggressive treatment may be needed "within 24 hours" of reoccurring symptoms.

Any patients suspected of having this infection have been told to seek the guidance of a trauma surgeon or the infectious disease doctor on call.

From among first 100 of 500 comments:

Zygomycosis is not the name of the fungus. It's the name of the condition, which explains why the word ends with "-osis," like "psychosis" or "halitosis" or "narcosis." The fungi are from the Zygomycota phylus

Buffmuffin

This fungus is not *rare*

What is rare is for people to go unwashed and without air conditioning for long periods of time.

Infections of indeterminable origins were the reason most people died by age 50 as recently as 120 years ago.

This fungus is omnipresent, particularly in the warm, moist climes of the south, and is of principle concern.

All emergency kits should contain large quantities of military Anti-Fungal powder, purchased surplus, and used on all moist areas of the body daily. Your emergency kit should also contain a steroidal anti-fungal cream and women's yeast infection pills.

In the event a fungal infection gets a firm hold on its host, those two items are the only chance you have of survival.

Both are prescription only, but any doctor worth his salt should have no problem prescribing you some to keep for an emergency kit.

My dog once got aspergillas in his sinus from digging in the dirt. We took him to one vet who actually told us that there was nothing they could do and we would have to put him down. We were shocked!! After cussing her out and reporting her to the Humane Society and the Veterinarian Society, we took him a local college university veterinarian school. They said the fungus would eventually eat through the membranes and tissues into his brain. They treated him with a simple solution of Sodium Bicarbonate and saline flushed into his nostrils. 3 treatments of this and he was back on his feet and back to normal. The fungus never returned.

This works if applied directly to the fungus.

Try olive leaf extract...a natural fungicide...very effective and well documented.

ACTIVE ozonated water is the SOLUTION to this mess on a grand scale AND on a personal wellness scale. The machines to make them can be made easily with a few capacitors , wires and a piece of volcanic rock or you can just buy one. You will not BELIEVE how well ozonated water works for things like this. It even kills that MRSA garbage

Fungus, much like bacteria and viruses, are always present everywhere. If most people knew the pathogen load that continuously surrounds them at all points in time, they'd bathe twice daily in bleach. The reason it has become deadly is becuase of getting open wound infections. It's much like getting a tetanus shot after getting deep wounds. Also, the article is not entirely correct. The DISEASE is called zygomycosis, which is the broadest description of a fungal infection. It can be caused by several species of fungus across a few families.

Comments seem to be ignoring the actual reason this created such a problem. Diabetes. The poorly managed diabetic is just an easy sugar source for the fungus. If you are peeing a lot, drinking a lot, and constantly hungry while being overweight/obese get your hemoglobin A1c checked tomorrow. Could save your life/limbs/eyes/kidneys

Those who have a skin infection resembling a moist heat rash should seek medical help immediately.

Likewise those experiencing running nose, swollen sinuses, itchy eyes or sinus pressure; particularly in conjunction with a rash, cut, abrasion, laceration or puncture.

Several of the victims failed to seek help during the rash stage of the infection, thinking it a minor skin infection, out of a sense of civic duty; so as not to tie up limited medical resources with their 'minor' rash. While admirable, this is inadvisable.

These infections spread rapidly, visibly increasing in size over the course of a day.

If you experience a skin rash, most particularly in the moist areas of the body, seek out medical assistance.

As a precaution against infection, use topical anti-fungal agents on your skin surfaces in sweaty areas, as well as on your feet.

Surplus military anti-fungal powder is idea. That said, i understand many people do not have access to what they *want* at this time... Therefore:

Alternatively: While not ideal, over-the-counter athletes foot remedies, vaginal creams and other antimycotics will work as a preventative. These may be found in quantity at or in the ruins of local pharmacies. They should be used liberally and applied to existing cuts and moist areas of the body.

None of the above preventatives are of sufficient strength to combat an existing infection.

If you have an existing skin rash or infection, again, i urge you to seek medical attention for it immediately.

When you have such a big area piled high with wet rotting materials and every kind of wildlife and domestic animals the area can turn into a witches brew in no time. My question is...WHERE IS THE MILITARY? There was not ONE uniform in site for at least the first week. There should be burn piles down there by now for all the junk that has to be disposed of. After Alecia in Houston the huge fire piles on Galveston beach burned for months to dispose of all the rotting debri. This "clean up" seems to be going NOWHERE. Half of Camp LeJune should be there by now helping out,, but instead they are "Liberating" the towel heads in Afghanistan.

Tea Tree Oil works good against fungus, only externally.

Steven King wrote a story about a meterorite than landed and has a fungus in it that took over the world.

I have this fungus doesn't have the same idea.
