NATO is deliberately targeting Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, media reports have quoted a senior military alliance official as saying. Previously NATO had said that it did not target individuals in its military campaign in Libya.

The alliance official says the UN resolution justifies the action, because as head of the military, Gaddafi is an essential part of the command structure.

This comes as fresh air strikes sent plumes of smoke over the Libyan leader's compound and nearby military barracks. But the Libyan army has fought back, reportedly shooting down a NATO helicopter 160 kilometers southwest of Tripoli.

US journalist Alexander Cockburn says that NATO has no authority to kill Gaddafi.

“There’s absolutely no possibility that Security Council resolutions 1970 and 1973 permit that,” Cockburn told RT. “The resolutions, as you well know, were to try and ensure the safety of civilians. How this is being transferred to an assassination attempt – which they’ve been trying for weeks now, of course – is beyond any reason. It’s absurd to claim it.”

The journalist also quoted the International Crisis Group, a respected independent body, which stated that the entire NATO campaign is merely prolonging an illegal use of force and making it far more difficult to reach a settlement.

“What is distasteful is to see the collusion of the International Criminal Court, which… initially came forward with these new accusations of Gaddafi’s crimes against humanity and a mass rape program, which has been denounced as almost certainly untrue by Amnesty International,” Cockburn added.

“In fact, if you look at the entire history, there’s almost no serious data given to the claims that Gaddafi was committing so-called crimes against humanity, genocide or even major massacres,” the journalist concluded.

This whole thing is about oil.

Also, targeting heads of nations for assassination is now completely on the table.

US oil deal reveals real reasons behind Libyan campaign Oil terminal in Libya. Photo: RIA Novosti The first shipment of Libyan oil arrived to the US on June 8th, following a deal signed by the US and the Transitional National Council, the self-proclaimed legitimate government of Libya. The sale finally reveals the true reasons behind the NATO campaign, previously described as an attempt to provide security for Libyan civilians. The said civilians keep suffering, NATO forces keep trying to break the stalemate and America seems to be the only side of the conflict benefitting from the so called “rescue operation”. Meanwhile representatives of Arab and Western countries are meeting ...

Libya offer oil block contract deals to China, IndiaTRIPOLI: Libya is considering offering direct oil block contracts to China, India and other nations it considers friends in its month long conflict with rebels, Libya's top oil official said on Saturday. National Oil Corporation Chairman Shukri Ghanem said Libya's crude production had fallen to less than 400,000 barrels per day from about 1.6 million before the crisis and warned that oil exports might halt altogether if output is not restored. "Because of the situation, we will be looking at giving direct block contracts to countries ready to come and work in the country because we want to increase production," he said. ...

Ground attack looms in Libya - next step on NATO war list? Italy will host the next major international meeting on Libya. Leaders from NATO and the Arab league will gather this Thursday to plan the political transition following the departure or ousting of Libyan leader Mamuamar Gaddafi. And as stalemate grips Libya, a NATO spokesman says the use of ground troops may be the only way to move the situation forward.

This is true. Oil is the primary motivator behind all of this.

They would be mad to even try it. Libya is a literal armed camp.
