Would you pay $10k for a photo with the First Lady? Michelle Obama flies to LA to raise money for husband's re-election

By Fiona Roberts

If Barack Obama's worried about finding enough cash for his 2012 election campaign, he needn't be - his wife's got it covered.

The First Lady charged lucky - and wealthy - bidders a whopping $10,000 to have their photograph taken with her at a fundraising luncheon today in Los Angeles.

With 500 attendees, it means Michelle Obama could have netted up to $5million just for smiling at the camera, on top of the $1,000 each person paid per plate.

She's not the only Obama in search of campaign funds today.

Her husband was due to speak at the Arsht Center in Miami Beach tonight before heading to $35,800 a head fundraising dinner at a private home in Coconut Grove.

In the past Mrs Obama has appeared reluctant to hit the fundraising trail and follow in the footsteps of past first ladies including Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton, who raised millions of dollars for their husbands during election campaigns.

Mrs Bush attended at least 20 events during the 2006 midterm elections, raising more than $10million, while Hillary and Bill Clinton were renowned for their joint cash-raising events.

But Mrs Obama attended several events on behalf of beleaguered Democrat candidates in last year's midterm elections, and has at least two more fundraising events scheduled in California this month.

Tomorrow she will attend a breakfast in Oakland hosted by chef Alice Waters, where tickets range from $1,000 to a huge $25,000 to be a 'co-host'.

Those who shelled out $10,000 for a photograph at the Pasadena fundraiser this afternoon could also look forward to an unspecified length of 'private time' with the First Lady.

Tonight she will attend another $1,000 a ticket fundraiser in Bel Air, which is likely to be attended by stars including Sex and the City creator Michael Patrick King and actresses Ellen and Portia DeGeneres.

This morning the First Lady ditched her fundraising mission to attend a panel discussion at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, on how to integrate stories about military families into film and television.

She was joined by Katherine Fugate, creator of Army Wives, and director and producer J.J. Adams, who has just seen his latest film, Super 8, open to critical acclaim.

Mrs Obama also spent time promoting Joining Forces, a project she launched with Jill Biden to support military families.

This afternoon she went on to film a guest appearance on Nickleodean's iCarly, which features the daughter of a U.S. Army officer serving abroad.

I would insist on wearing a Han Solo costume however.

Don't forget to grab a light saber. : )
