During committee testimony this week in Austin, a Texas senator interrupted a Spanish speaker and telling him he should "be speaking in English" during a committee hearing. Antolin Aguirre of the Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition was testifying against Senate Bill 9 that would help crack down on illegal immigrants in Texas. Aguirre spoke through an interpreter even though he had been in the U.S. since 1988. Two minutes into Antolin Aguirre’s testimony, Sen. Chris Harris, a Republican from Arlington, interrupted asking Aguirre’s interrupter, "Did I understand him correctly that he has been here since 1988?" Harris asked. "Why aren’t you speaking in English then?" Through his interpreter, Aguirre said Spanish is his "first language and since it is his first time giving testimony he would rather do it in Spanish." "It is insulting to us," Sen. Harris fired back. "It is very insulting. And if he knows English, he needs to be speaking in English." The fiery exchange happened on Monday during a Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committee hearing. Law makers were hearing testimony on the purposed Senate Bill 9 – The so-called sanctuary cities bill. The bill would allow local law enforcement officials to check a suspect’s immigration status. Supporters of Senate Bill 9 have said it would help crack down on illegal immigrants. Opponents argue that it will do little to help border security and that it’s instead based on racism. Despite the blow-up The Texas Senate passed the bill Wednesday. It now goes to the House with a vote expected in the next few days.

Servant chris harris had better watch it. Operating under the guise of a 'homeland security' hearing he demanded that someone 'needs' to speak english.This can easily be construed as violating the guys civil rights under color of law.

Most posters will not understand the above point, because they think that a persons rights, or lack of them, are dictated by government.Harris has zero authority to regulate anyones speech.

What an idiot. Why should we want them to speak English? Let them speak Spanish, emphasize their difference. If a Mexican can't speak English, he can't ask my daughter out on a date. Or "date".

But he can vote away your job. And vote to take away your daughter's chances of entering law and medical school and give it to an English speaking Mexican who is unqualified. In California 1 in 4 medical students must be a Mexican.l .

Maybe he does. Was the hearing a sworn hearing, like a court hearing? If it was Aguirre might be in contempt if he could speak English and didn't. Regardless, Aguirre has shown contempt for America by being here 23 years and not assimilating. He should be flogged then deported.

there are 2 issues. assimilation,+ the scope of authority of govt over the people. Since i dont like the govt, i always focus on the latter 1st.I understand tho. My Gpa came here from Italy & learned english, & never spoke Italian again, even to his kids.

Those were the type of immigrants who made this country great. They came to America because they wanted to be Americans. This new bunch seems to be here only for the money, I find that extremely insulting, and extremely UnAmerican.

Thats right. He also opened an Italian restaurant when folks in california would say "what's piZZa?" (with a z) I found out a few years ago that he was a big fan of Fr Coughlin (anti fed) & was not fond of jews, which i think is funny & shows he was wise.

I wouldn't have let that goddamned leech speak two seconds of spanglish before I would have blown a gasket and gave him a royal ass-chewing. Then I would have evicted every goddamn worthless piece of illegal shit at their table and hounded them out of the Capitol building, preferably with me lighting up their backsides with a bullwhip all the way out.
