While the war rages on in Afghanistan the military continues to cope with a battle here at home, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

To date, the military has diagnosed 78,000 cases of PTSD, but the Veteran's Administration says that number is inaccurate.

The V.A. say the real number is closer to 800,000.

To catch up with numbers like that the Joint Chiefs of Staff recommend new programs to help both soldiers and their families.

"There's so many people out there who are missing out and it's hard because you don't want to see other people going through what you went through," said Katelyn Taylor, wife of soldier suffering from PTSD.

The Pentagon expects the number of soldiers battling PTSD to continue to climb.

The military's latest mental health survey of combat troops in Afghanistan found 20 percent, one in five, suffering from acute stress, depression or anxiety.

One of the reasons for this miscalculation was DELIBERATE chicanery by the VA.

Knowing that PTSD was very frequent among Vietnam vets and expensive for the VA to diagnose, the VA had a rule, until about 1991, that REQUIRED that all psych diagnoses be done according to the Third edition of the DSM (Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Assn) .... which didn't have an entry for PTSD. Therefore the VA's own doctors could not mention PTSD and the diagnoses made by real doctors could be ignore because PTSD did not translate into the VA's official nomenclature. So the usual VA-accepted diagnosis was "Personality Disorder" -- that is, something pre-enlistment and not covered by the VA at all. I should add that, by 1991, DSM3 was about fifteen years out of print, having been replaced by DSM4 which had an extensive entry for PTSD and related ailments.

Anyway, by relying on that bit of red tape, the VA was able to cheat thousands of combat vets out of millions of benefits.(The VA pulled an analogous stunt to cheat Vietnam vets out of coverage for the multitude of ailments caused by Agent Orange exposure.)

In 1991 the VA was finally yanked into line -- it adopted a rule making DSM4 its official manual just as DSM4 went out of print and was replaced by DSM4R! A lot of vets who had previously been screwed out of their rightful claims got something - usually nothing retroactive but at least current treatment. Of course, by then, a lot of PTSD-afflicted vets had (1) died - sometimes by suicide or by self-destructive behavior such as "self-medication" with booze or street drugs, (2) been incarcerated - possibly for misbehavior that might be attributed to their PTSD, or (3) were too far gone to manage a new VA application.

Thanks for the information.

One brother-in-law came back really screwed up. I knew him briefly, we talked a lot. It wasn't the Combat that screwed him up, it was the drugs. Killed himself after 6-7 yrs. Two others have about the same attitude I do about Life; "It's a bitch, but it's the best we got!". Blowing your brains out only leaves victims.

Before I had a transplant a V.A Psychiatrist got to know me. A lot of questions, tests, infiltrators (underlings just shootin' the bull).

They were going to make sure I wasn't going to cash out easily. Quite an experience.
