Title: "Communist Party" on right track - Chinese college students

A recent Ministry of Education survey shows that almost 80 percent of college students are willing to join the Communist Party of China (CPC). This will be a tremendous boost for the CPC, preparing to celebrate its 90th anniversary on July 1.

The survey, which covered 25,000 students in 140 institutions of higher education, was conducted professionally and should reflect the true state of mind on college campuses today.

The study, 20th of its kind and published early this month, reveals very high approval ratings for major national achievements attributable to the CPC and an unusual optimism about what it will deliver. Nothing could have made a better birthday gift for the Party.

With an overwhelming majority of the country's young elites on its side, the world's largest political party can rest assured of its impact on younger members of society.

According to the survey, more than 90 percent of the respondents were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with the country's response to natural disasters such as the Yushu earthquake, the Zhouqu landslide, as well as the international relief operations in Haiti and Pakistan. International events such as the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai and the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, too, stood out as examples of fine leadership. This inspired 89.6 percent of the respondents to be optimistic about the CPC's potential to come up with a more sophisticated leadership to facilitate the nation's march toward greater prosperity.

As its membership continues to increase - CPC had almost 78 million members by the end of 2009 - the task of regulating its ranks becomes greater than ever. Since the CPC is determined to represent a broader spectrum of interests and open its arms to some previously excluded sectors of society, it has to check personal ambitions around its policy goals, and honor its promise of good governance.

Because the average citizen judges the Party from the conduct of its individual members, there have been stronger calls for fine personal examples. But the negative impact of the bad ones, which seemingly abound in what people see and hear in the media, can hardly be offset by the officially recommended role models.

The teaching of moral values is not enough to ensure each and every one of the nearly 80 million CPC members steers clear of corruption and bad conduct. There are plenty of other ways to manage their actions. The CPC has come up with numerous measures to discipline its members, not all of which have been taken seriously, or have yielded the expected results.

The Party needs tangible improvements in self-discipline for its political aspirations.

Could be phony PR but more likely competent leadership at the top, dedicated to domestic prosperity, not to engaging in wars as America is doing on behalf of Israel. Still be a good idea to see what Epoch Times has to say about this opinion piece.

Could be phony PR

It is. How could it not be? It's got more than it's share of subjective fluff.

Though I obviously agree with you in China's much more reasonable foreign policy compared to the USA.

While most students in China can't afford tuition the $400 - $2200 annual fee is not bad for those who can. Thousands of student teachers get free tuition and board for undertaking to teach in rural areas for 5 - 10 years. Plus there's scholarships and low-interest loans for others with employers required to pay off loans, so those in the system should be fairly satisfied. Besides, if you're not a happy camper then you might not get a scholarship:

"The new system, to be tested in selected institutions during the 1986-87 academic year, was designed to help students who could not cover their own living expenses but who studied hard, obeyed state laws, and observed discipline codes. Students eligible for financial aid were to apply to the schools and the China Industrial and Commercial Bank for low-interest loans. Three categories of students eligible for aid were established: top students encouraged to attain all-around excellence; students specializing in education, agriculture, forestry, sports, and marine navigation; and students willing to work in poor, remote, and border regions or under harsh conditions, such as in mining and engineering. In addition, free tuition and board were to be offered at teachers' colleges, and the graduates were required to teach at least five years in primary and middle schools. After graduation, a student's loans were to be paid off by his or her employer in a lump sum, and the money was to be repaid to the employer by the student through five years of payroll deductions."

probably either govt lies, or if the students really said that, they said it because they were afraid of saying anything contrary to their commie state. Horrible abuses & tyranny against dissent remain the norm in china.

Even with leaders as talented as Hu Jintao:

asianhistory.about.com/od...ers/p/HuJinTaoProfile.htm

there's no way that they can tolerate interference from dissidents while trying to manage a country with the kind of disparity as exists in China, especially with a population of a billion plus. Besides, the democracy that some seek has turned out to be a fool's game, no better exemplified than in America where citizen civic interest has waned to the point where a tiny bunch of conniving duals have taken over the country's political machinery to serve their illegal Israeli state at a horrendous cost in US lives and treasure.
