May Was Cold In The US

Posted on by stevengoddard

Our friends have been blaming the severe weather in May on warm air from global warming. This is a brilliant theory, except that it was the 25th coldest May on record in the US.

Unfortunately, many climate experts lack access to the Internet and can’t look these things up themselves. The UN has a fund to provide computers for underprivileged climate experts.

Obviously, this moron did not visit the southwest.

We set record highs and record droughts here.

Here in the Pacific Northwet we were ten inches above normal in rainfall and averaged 6 degrees below normal for May. We had only 6 days at 70 or above from the beginning of Spring through the first week of June (normal is 26) - and we have only had 2 or 3 more since then. Currently it is 63 and mostly overcast. I can really see the difference in my plants. The tomatoes in containers in the driveway are doing fine because of the extra heat provided by the blacktop, but the ones in back in the main garden are poking along and are well below where they would be in a normal year. I'm still using heat retaining covers at the end of June.

We're in a cool-snap - 96/101, with more of the same forecast for the next week. One of the neighbors has already installed a rock and cacti yard.

I can't say that I envy you. I do like warmer temperatures but above 95 I start to feel it. Also it makes it hard to grow some things. Although Melons would do well. I could likely grow varieties that I wouldn't even attempt here.
