Cut Down On 'Carbs' To Reduce Body Fat, Study Authors Say

A modest reduction in consumption of carbohydrate foods may promote loss of deep belly fat, even with little or no change in weight, a new study finds. Presentation of the study results will be Sunday at The Endocrine Society's 93rd Annual Meeting in Boston.

When paired with weight loss, consumption of a moderately reduced carbohydrate diet can help achieve a reduction of total body fat, according to principal author Barbara Gower, PhD, a professor of nutrition sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

"These changes could help reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, stroke and coronary artery disease," Gower said, noting that excess visceral, or intra-abdominal, fat raises the risk of these diseases.

Gower and her colleagues conducted the study, with funding from the National Institutes of Health, in 69 overweight but healthy men and women. Subjects received food for two consecutive eight-week periods: first a weight maintenance intervention, and then a weight loss intervention, which cut the number of calories that each person ate by 1,000 each day.

Subjects received either a standard lower-fat diet or a diet with a modest reduction in carbohydrates, or "carbs," but slightly higher in fat than the standard diet. The moderately carb-restricted diet contained foods that had a relatively low glycemic index, a measure of the extent to which the food raises blood glucose levels. This diet consisted of 43 percent calories from carbohydrates and 39 percent calories from fat, whereas the standard diet contained 55 percent of calories from carbohydrates and 27 percent from fat. Protein made up the other 18 percent of each diet.

At the beginning and end of each study phase, the researchers measured the subjects' fat deep inside the abdomen and their total body fat using computed tomography (CT) and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans.

After the weight maintenance phase, subjects who consumed the moderately carb-restricted diet had 11 percent less deep abdominal fat than those who ate the standard diet. However, when the researchers analyzed results by race, they found it was exclusive to whites. Whites have more deep abdominal fat than Blacks even when matched for body weight or percent body fat, and may benefit from loss of this metabolically harmful depot, Gower said.

During the weight loss phase, subjects on both diets lost weight. However, the moderately carb-restricted diet promoted a 4 percent greater loss of total body fat, Gower said. "For individuals willing to go on a weight-loss diet, a modest reduction in carbohydrate-containing foods may help them preferentially lose fat, rather than lean tissue," she said. "The moderately reduced carbohydrate diet allows a variety of foods to meet personal preferences."

A friend of mine lost 40 pounds by drinking one eight ounce glass of water every hour and eating nothing but one can of Pregresso soup and kosher pickles every four hours. He drank an 8 ounce glass of water, ate a can of soup and if he was still hungry he filled up the pickles until he felt full. If he felt hungry between meals he snacked on pickles. Pickles only have 5 calories and almost no carbs. He bought the giant pickles so I'm guessing it didn't take many to fill him up.

In his case I think the weight problem was caused by a lack of portion control. Reducing his portions per meal reduced his calorie intake while increasing the number of times he ate in a day increased his metabolism. Anyway, it worked for him although I would be interested in how it affected his sodium levels. Overall though I would think that the extra weight caused more danger than the sodium levels did.

I am an admitted pickle snob....only Claussen for me. I would go broke on this pickle diet. Plus, I can always taste can in canned soup and prefer to make it homemade.

More water is doable though. : )

I'm convinced that the secret to his diet was portion control. Of course you can't completely count out the importance of the pickles in helping to fill his stomach. I would bet that homemade soup would work just as well as Progresso if the portion was the same. You could also probably find a very low cal substitute for pickles. Rice cakes? (yuk!).

The hardest part for me would be the lack of variety. I like pickles but I don't know if I could eat that many over such a long period of time.

edit:

He claimed that after a time he didn't eat as many pickles because his stomach shrank and the water and soup filled him up.

low calorie diets are not a good idea for health. Yes you will lose weight on one, but your overall health will suffer. Low weight does not equal good health. Exercise combined with eating nutritious foods in adequate quantity will make you healthier and keep you lean.

40 pounds less weight is much healthier than 40 pounds of excess weight. Besides that, I respectfully disagree that his diet was all that low in total calories per day. I just looked at a can of soup in my pantry. One can of vegetable beef soup is 180 calories per serving. The can holds two servings. That's 360 calories. Multiply that by 4 meals per day and that comes to 1440 calories. Throw in 8 pickles (2 per meal) at 5 calories a piece (40 calories) and that comes to 1480 calories.

I you look at the basal metabolic rate (BMR) formula, he weighed 280 pounds, is 45 years old and although I do not know his exact height, if I guess that it is 5'10" (70 inches), his BMR is 2393.4 calories. That is the number of calories per day needed to maintain his weight. He is only eating 913.4 calories per day less than that. This is hardly a huge reduction in calories.
