NEW YORK (Reuters) Jul 01 - Antimicrobial copper surfaces in intensive care units (ICU) kill 97% of bacteria that can cause nosocomial infections, according to preliminary results of a multisite clinical trial in the United States.

The 97% reduction rate in bacteria on antimicrobial copper surfaces is the same as that achieved by "terminal" cleaning -- a process that is done after a patient leaves a room.

The results also showed a 40% reduction in the risk of acquiring an infection.

The study, presented at the World Health Organization's 1st International Conference on Prevention and Infection Control (ICPIC) in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, backed what research teams at three U.S. hospitals suggested four years ago: replacing the most heavily contaminated touch surfaces in ICUs with antimicrobial copper will control bacteria growth and cut down on infection rates.

Hospital-acquired infections are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States behind heart disease, strokes and cancer.

Which is why I avoid hospitals. They are a good place to get dead.

Hospitals generally aren't good places to birth a baby unless there's risk or complication.

Copper Kills Most Hospital Bacteria: Study

A couple of weeks ago I was waiting at the pharmacy for a scrip and there were two grody looking men in line who were talking. One had either had surgery or emergency treatment on his heavily bandaged hand (if his body art was any indication he may have caught his paw in a motorcycle chain) and the other was an obese fellow who also looked as if soap companies don't make a lot off of him.

I was shocked to overhear that both had recently been treated for MRSA! The obese chap said it was on his butt cheek and he required surgery, and the other didn't say where his was.

It gave me the collywobbles to realize that they may not have been infected in hospitals, and that I could be stricken, too.

I'd be relieved to sit on a copper chair while waiting for my next scrip, especially if the person who sat there before me was a carrier like Typhoid Mary.
