NATO says a US-led soldier and an ISAF civilian were killed in an attack in the country's volatile east. The military coalition, in line with its usual policy, has withheld other details about the incident. Two American soldiers were also killed in a shooting by an Afghan guard. Another US soldier was also wounded in the shooting that took place in the northern province of Panjshir. The guard himself was also killed after American soldiers fired back. The developments come at a time when the US-led war in Afghanistan seems to be at a crucial stage with militants believed to be gaining ground. At least 294 US-led foreign forces have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year. According to official figures, more than 2,575 US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001. The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of 150,000 US-led foreign forces in the country. The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war. JR/HGH/MMN Unidentified gunmen riding on a motorcycle first opened fire and then set a NATO container on fire in Dasht area of Mastung late Saturday, a Press TV correspondent reported Sunday, citing local police officials. The attackers shot dead the driver before setting the container on fire, they added. The NATO container was on its way from Karachi to Kandahar city of Afghanistan for delivering weapons to US-led forces stationed in the war-torn country. NATO supply trucks have been the target of frequent attacks in Pakistan. Pro-Taliban militants claim responsibility for such attacks, arguing that the assaults are in retaliation for non-UN-sanctioned US drone airstrikes on Pakistan's tribal regions. Washington claims the drone strikes target militants, but casualty figures indicate that the aerial bombings have led to the loss of hundreds of civilians. MSH/MB
