BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Researchers have found that people whose brains show early signs of Alzheimer's are twice as likely to fall as healthy people, according to Reuters reports Monday.

The research findings were presented on Sunday at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Paris.

The new study involved 125 older adults, who took brain scans and contributed samples of their spinal fluid, and were also asked to keep a journal of how many times they fell during an eight-month period.

Participants whose scans showed early signs of Alzheimer's reported an increased risk of falls.

"To our knowledge, this is the first study to identify a risk of increased falls related to a diagnosis of preclinical Alzheimer's disease," said the study author Susan Stark, who is also an assistant professor of occupational therapy and neurology at Washington University in St. Louis.

"It suggests that higher rates of falls can occur very early in the disease process," Stark added, according to Health Day reports.

The researchers also noted that people with the disease were at higher risks for falls because Alzheimer's was linked to balance and gait disorders, as well as to the problems with visual and spatial perception.

if falling is any indication of alzheimers i am screwed, because i fall down quite a lot & have since i was a kid. it hurts a lot more now than it used to, but i pretty much have always gotten injured whenever i fall.if... uh, what was i saying?

Falling never hurt anyone. It's the sudden stop that does that.

I fell 43 feet and landed lawn dart style breaking myself up pretty good throwing in a week and a half vacation from reality to coma land.

I had a nice series of leasions from my right frontal lobe across the brain to my left parietal lobe. I still studder somewhat when I am tired and people who have known me well before I fell said I seem somewhat more patient and easy going since then.

I take their word for it; I percieve no real difference.

I hope such an injury does not give one the propensity to contract Alzheimers. I do know it produces a strong desire for no repete.

I try to keep my arguments with gravity simple and few.

i am sonmewhat familiar with the story of your escapades with the tree. the good thing for you is that that type of fall i dont think would apply to this study b/c it did not occur in an everyday situation involving ordinary moving about, motor skills, etc.

When I hit my head I usually walk or stand into something. As a bicyclist I seldom lose my footing with terra firma.

I think you are right. At least I'm doing better then that incense cedar that died this year after a slow death that started when construction destroyed a large part of it's root structure in 1098.
