When her mother died while she was only five years old, she was sent to live with (male) relatives who thought that girls shouldn't be educated, pushing her to memorize the Bible, in her mind one of her greatest achievements. When she was ready to go to high school, she was told that she couldn't so she ran away from her relative's home. She graduated at age 19 and taught for two years before entering Lane University and meeting future husband David Jacob Eisenhower. She was named Kansas Mother of the Year in 1945.
