"Many of us are lucky we didn't suffer the exact same fate. I am one of those."
Congradulations on escaping. My Mother was a vicious drunk who never recovered from the disease of addiction.
A friend of mine just had his girlfriend move up from California to "escape her parents." Upon meeting her I pissed him off by bluntly saying, "Dude, she is an alcoholic trying the geographic cure," and that never works.
He doubted my observation was accurate, but that is exactly why I wound up in Oregon from Connecticut; an alcoholic running from problems she was convinced were not what she sawe when looking in the mirror. I'm a long time member of Al Anon.
The problem she has is in a bottle. I won't visit them while she's there because she is angry at my attitude about her love of her life, the bottle.
I told her I hate it and don't compromise before it, and so the process of an alcoholic working to poison the well of a friendship has begun.
No matter, my sanity about the stuff came at a heavy price and I'd gladly cut the friendship then deal with people like this one.
He loves her, she loves the bottle, it is a doomed relationship anyway. Myself, I never had any drinking problem but hate the crap so much I have not had even a beer since I left the Army where I just drank to be able to socialize with people I had to bond with for military reasons.
The cannabis and other crap is easy to avoid. Alcohol problems make people so difficult to deal with and is so enscounced into our culture it is always a thorn waiting to be dealt with in a new permutation.
