Bottled water in your car is very dangerous!

On the Ellen show, Sheryl Crow said that this is what caused her breast cancer. It has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue.

Sheryl Crow's oncologist told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car..

Pass this on to all the women in your life. This information is the kind we need to know that just might save us! Use a stainless steel canteen or a glass bottle instead of plastic!

LET EVERYONE WHO HAS A WIFE / GIRLFRIEND / DAUGHTER KNOW PLEASE!

This information is also being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Centre ..

No plastic containers in microwaves. No plastic water bottles in freezers. No plastic wrap in microwaves.

Dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to cells in our bodies. Don't freeze plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently the Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.

He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating food in the microwave using plastic containers.... This especially applies to foods that contain fat.

He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastic releases dioxin into the food.

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same result, but without the dioxin. So, such things as TV dinners, instant soups, etc., should be removed from their containers and heated in something else.

Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's safer to use tempered glass, such as Pyrex, etc.

He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the styrene foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons...

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Cling film, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in your life!

Oh Jeebus!

Just yesterday I got the boy to bring in the bottles that he had stockpiled in the car and I used them to make coffee for Wifey!

Every time he goes out the door he takes more bottles and he never brings them back or finishes the open ones.

I thought I could use them as long as they didn't have any "floaties" in them, you know, food or chewing tobacco that his girlfriend back washed into the bottles. (I was kidding his girlfriend of course)

And, Sheryl Crow is one of my all time fave artists and I was truly concerned about her cancer.

Ugh.

I can only hope that we slip the noose on the use of that water, and we'll all use coolers and cold packs if we take water with us in the future.

I keep reverse osmosis chilled in glass bottles in the fridge. It tastes really good especially on a hot day.

I worked as an installer of RO equipment briefly in my youth, and the general consensus was that water devoid of minerals has no taste. (I agree with you and I love the "taste" if you can call it that of cold, RO water)

Also, as you know the micron-sized membranes that filter RO water are prone to bacterial growth and must be treated with chlorine periodically to restore the system. Back when I worked in the field RO systems were fairly high maintenance, and it wasn't unusual for uninspired folks to abandon the systems because of it.

Because "water is the universal solvent" people found that laundry washed in RO water required little or no detergent. It is actually the minerals in water that inhibits washing of clothes, and the "harder" the water the less effective it is as a solvent and the more soap required to loosen dirt and stains.

What if anything has changed since I was dewin' it?

You know more about it than I do. After the radiation scare from Japan I decided to buy one. I found the best deal on the internet is actually being sold out of a small office/warehouse about 20 miles from here. I also wanted it because I hadn't drank the tap water here in 3 years. It has sulfur, like rotten eggs smell and taste. From the well. Also lots of calcium and/or lime. You can see it when water is boiled. A lot. I'd been bringing home 5 gallon bottles once or twice a week for 3 years. I paid $175 cash for it. Under the sink model. It turns crappy water into pure water. It's impressive. All I know is it took a long time to set it up and I'm supposed to change the 6 or 7 different filters once every 6 months.

Here's a link to the one I got: http://cgi.eba y .ca/Reverse-Osmosis-Water-Filter-100-GPD-AQUASAFE-6-Stage-/260813868034? pt=Small_Kitchen_Appliances_US&hash=item3cb9b7cc02#ht_5916wt_907

Thanks for telling me about the laundry. I should get a filter for the whole house so the laundry and shower water has no minerals. It has a lot. Way too much.

Snopes offers the following about this:

Bottle Royale

Claim:   Reusing, freezing, or heating plastic water bottles will cause them to break down into carcinogenic compounds or release dioxins.

MIXTURE OF TRUE AND FALSE INFORMATION

Examples:

[Collected via e-mail, 2007]

No water bottles in freezer. A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

Do Not Drink Water Bottles Left in the Car

This information was given to me by my husband and I know all the ladies in my life should know and please forward it to all the ladies in your life.

My husband has a friend whose mother recently got diagnosed with breast cancer. The doctor told her women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The doctor said that the heat and the plastic of the bottle have certain chemicals that can lead to breast cancer. So please be careful and do not drink that water bottle that has been left in a car and pass this on to all the women in your life.

Origins:   Sorting out the various claims made about potential health issues associated with
plastic water bottles is a difficult process, both because so many different claims are being circulated and because the generic term "plastic bottle" can in fact refer to any one of several different types of bottles with distinctly different chemical properties.

Water, soda, and juice are typically sold in bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET or PETE. These containers are intended to be disposable, single-use bottles, although many consumers wash them and re-use them to hold drinking water (or other beverages). One common claim referenced above is that freezing or re-using PET bottles releases "dioxins" into whatever liquids they may contain, but of this claim Johns Hopkins researcher Dr. Rolf Halden says:
Q: What do you make of this recent email warning that claims dioxins can be released by freezing water in plastic bottles?

A: This is an urban legend. There are no dioxins in plastics. In addition, freezing actually works against the release of chemicals. Chemicals do not diffuse as readily in cold temperatures, which would limit chemical release if there were dioxins in plastic, and we don't think there are.
Another common type of plastic bottle is made with bisphenol A, also known as BPA. These products are typically rigid plastic bottles intended for multiple re-use, such as baby bottles or water bottles carried by cyclists. Concerns about tests that may link BPA ingestion with cancer and reproductive damage in some animals and the possibility that BPA could leach out of plastic bottles and into the liquids they contain has led to bans in some areas on the use of BPA in plastic products intended for children (such as baby bottles), and has prompted some consumers to seek out non-BPA alternatives.

From Snopes:

Analysis of email: False as written, though research is ongoing (per update above). In the United States, plastic bottles of the type used for commercially marketed water are regulated by the FDA as "food contact substances" and held to the same safety standards as food additives.

This means, among other things, that the FDA has reviewed test data on the safety of the plastics used in water bottles — including the potential for hazardous chemicals leaching or "migrating" from the plastic into the water — and established that they pose no significant risk to human health. The water itself is also tested and must meet basic quality standards similar to those set by the Environmental Protection Agency for public drinking water.

Please note that the plastic used in the manufacture of pre-packaged, disposable water bottles is different from those believed to pose a human health threat in other applications, such as baby bottles, plastic children's toys, and reusable sports water bottles. For example, disposable water bottles don't contain bisphenol A (BPA), about which human safety concerns have been raised.

That's not to say that bottled water is absolutely free of contaminants, nor that chemical leaching never takes place. Studies done on water bottled in FDA-approved polyethylene terephthalate (PET), for example, did find trace amounts of potentially hazardous substances believed to have migrated from the plastic. The important point to take away, however, is that these amounts were minuscule and well within the safety limits set by FDA and EPA regulators.

According to Dr. Rolf Halden of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, consumers face a much greater risk from potential exposure to microbial contaminants in bottled water — germs, to you and me — than from chemical ones. For that reason, most experts suggest not refilling or reusing empty bottles.

It should also be noted that the plastics used in the manufacturer of reusable water bottles vary in composition and quality and may be more susceptible to chemical leaching.

Note on Sheryl Crow: Another version of this message contains the additional claim that pop singer Sheryl Crow announced during a 2006 appearance on the Ellen Degeneres TV show that she got breast cancer as a result of drinking bottled water. While it is true that she discussed her bout with cancer on that show and, among other things, cautioned viewers against drinking water from heated plastic bottles, my understanding is that she did not directly attribute her own cancer to that cause. On September 1, 2006 she issued a similar warning in a statement on her official website but, again, did not specifically claim that bottled water was the cause of her own illness.

There are more affordable systems to manage hard water for whole house use.

RO water for drinking and cooking is the way I'd do it, and then I'd install another system of tanks (brine tank, restocked with sea salt for iron and other filtering media for other undesirables) because they'll last much longer and be cheaper to refurbish when the time comes. A brine tank also requires daily backwash into your main drain to push the rusty iron out. (The controls include a programmable clock that manage a reversing valve and drain piping and a check valve to prevent contaminated drain water from entering the system)

Whole house RO can get to be a real pain and very pricey, and once the system starts to smell (bacterial contamination) the system is done until the maintenance is completed. The under sink system you installed is pretty much identical to the best available and you can bypass it temporarily if needed. Also, you can't set your watch by the 6 months estimate between filter changes. The duration will vary depending on the water quality and amount of use. If it lasts longer than 6 months don't change it prematurely. It'll let you know (smell) when it's time.

Well of course Sheryn Crow knows more than a real doctor. And so her case of cancer MUST be related to drinking water, not, for example, her long career of singing in smoky nightclubs or banging cancer survivor Lance Armstrong.

Plastic drinking water bottle became popular only in the last generation. What was causing the cancers before then?

I won't pretend to know medicine, but is it possible that Sheryl Crowe's breat cancer might be related to the fact that she plays a full size accordian hanging from her neck and resting on her chest?
