I've been told that the pen knife on my keychain is threatening by uniformed JBTs.

After all, it's got about a 1" blade that would probably snap off if actually thrust into something.

You call that a knife? This is a knife.

If a cop saw you carrying that in a sheath he would probably just shoot you first and ask questions later.

I have a few collectible knives but I've never owned a Damascus steel or ceramic blade darn it!

My son--he is actually my stepson but I think of him as my son--really likes knives and has started a collection. I try to get him one or two as I can--wish I could buy him any and all that he might like to have but I guess we can't always do all we would like to do for those we care about. I know I can't.

If there is a better way of showing that in your heart he's your son I don't know what it is.

He will always remember you as the man who did what so many cannot-accept another man's son as his own and love him unconditionally. And each knife regardless of the price will demonstrate how important he is to you, something everyone takes for granted when a bio dad brings gifts to his child. But it's those crucial things you share with him during his formative years that makes you his father, and he will understand that and pass that treasure on during his life. Each time you explain why the aesthetics of a certain knife caught your eye "and you believed that he'd also like it" his heart will swell with a joy that he may not even be able to properly express. But, trust me, someday he will.

Those knives aren't just keepsakes but treasured heirlooms that represent your very special love, a kind of love that makes me proud to be a man. It not only speaks volumes about your love for his mother but it's a love that provides the so very essential net and umbrella, filling a vacuum that all boys desperately need to fully form their character and to completely develop as men.

I love my $20 Buck folders and $25 Gerber LST (even more now that Buck steel can be seriously sharpened and not just relied upon for their strength) as much as my pricey Puma, COLD STEEL and SPYDERCO blades because the Bucks were gifts from the kids and because they're darn cool designs!

A cool knife is truly a thing of beauty and some of the most functional I own could be lost and replaced without bankrupting us. It's really great that my son can carry a razor sharp knife in a bathing suit pocket while swimming without having to worry if it's lost. All of his (and mine) can be readily opened in a flash with one hand and will hold an edge long enough to cut away from a life threatening entanglement even if it involves nylon rope. As "working poor folks" we really appreciate that knife manufacturers are gearing products to our tastes and budget, and I'd never be ashamed to produce one of mine at a champagne soiree of snobby rich people, especially if it's one of their daughters whose hair is caught in the swimming pool suction drain. (A girl drowned in NJ years ago as five adult men stood around because not one had a pocketknife on his person. If a man has his pants on he should have a blade in his pocket)

The lines and blade grinds of these affordable knives are so cool that I just gotta love them, so you can be sure that your son will appreciate those that catch your eye as much as you do, especially if you get him a small DMT sharpening stone (from $13 to $40-I love this one) and he can replace an edge after use and (because of the fast cutting embedded diamond chips) not spend five minutes doing it.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and warm post. I appreciate it very much. I actually have three stepchildren and I love them all like they were my own and try to do what I can for them--it isn't much but along with any little gift I can give them they have my love all day every day. They are very special to me.

Speaking of knives as gifts, my bestest buddy was over today to show me his latest acquisition (a S&W round butt 4" bbl Mod 66 with a titanium, plutonium finish or sumthin like that) and we started discussing knives which quickly became show and tell.

Well, my son quite unexpectedly gave me something I've wanted for a while but never owned-a super kewl GERBER Assisted Opening pocketknife!

He temporarily misplaced the knife then bought a replacement so he gave me the lost then found first one! It seems that my generosity to him whenever he needs stuff (working guitar cords, really neato specialty tools and meters, etc.,) has rubbed off and he wants to share that good feeling I get when I delight him with unexpected gifts!

I also surprised my buddy with a lockable, "TSA approved" pistol case for his new .357 (he brought the gun over in a plastic grocery bag) so it was a fun time for all!
